YesAsia Editorial Description

Internationally acclaimed director Park Chan Wook catapults Korean Cinema to a new high with the second film in his Vengeance Trilogy. Poignant, fatalistic, and action-packed, Old Boy is a stunning, gut-wrenching tale full of shocking revelations, captivating imagery, and amazing performances by leads Choi Min Sik (Shiri) and Yoo Ji Tae (One Fine Day). Old Boy won many awards around the world, including the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

The abrasive Oh Dae Soo (Choi Min Sik) is suddenly kidnapped one day and confined in a cell with only a television set. He makes various efforts to escape and even attempts to commit suicide, but all ends in failure. From the television, Dae Soo learns that his wife had been murdered and that he was wanted by the police for the crime. Shocked, grieved, and angry, Dae Soo starts digging a hole in the wall with a spoon.

After 15 years of inexplicable imprisonment, a slightly manic Dae Soo is just as inexplicably released. Returned to an unfamiliar world, he promptly embarks on a bloody raging path of revenge to find the truth behind his imprisonment. He runs into a female sushi chef named Mido who promises to help him unravel all his unsolved questions. His relationship with Mido, however, inadvertently places her in danger. Trapped in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with the mysterious Woo Jin (Yoo Ji Tae), Dae Soo must put everything on the line to find the answers. The truth, however, may not set him free.

Professional Review of "Old Boy (Taiwan Version)"

August 24, 2004

This professional review refers to Old Boy Ultimate Edition
Old Boy - A Fight Between Two Cornered Beasts

Directed by Park Chan Wook, Old Boy has earned a reputation as the Korean version of the Hollywood hit Kill Bill. This action suspenser, however, brings you less blood with more violence. Awarded Best Actor at the Blue Dragon Awards, Choi Min Sik teams up with Yoo Ji Tae from Into the Mirror to give you the creeps in this contest of wits and courage.

Park Chan Wook won acclaim in the movie business by touching on controversial and even tabooed subjects. JSA (Joint Security Area) dealt with political struggle, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance highlighted the distortion of human identities, and Old Boy unveils the darkest side of human beings. The key theme of this movie, the dilemma between love and hatred, really keeps the audience guessing.

First and Foremost: Revenge
Oh Dae Soo (Choi Min Sik) is a married businessman with a lovely daughter. One night he creates a disturbance while drunk and gets arrested. After being bailed out, he is suddenly abducted. After that night Dae Soo is illegally imprisoned in a cell. Fifteen years later, he is suddenly released and he vows for revenge. It turns out that his imprisonment is just one part of Woo Jin's (Yoo Ju Tae) long-term retaliation. What gives Woo Jin the greatest pleasure is to see how Dae Soo is being tortured both when he is locked up or free. Now the two men desperate to eliminate each other meet, while the story becomes even more complex when a girl called Mido shows up.

In Old Boy, the two men love their women so much that losing them means the end of the world. They are actually victims of the same fate. Dae Soo pays his time living in hell and being savagely tortured. Fifteen years later he is granted freedom, but beset with a killer mindset. Woo Jin, on the other hand, swears revenge for his lost love by imposing the same living-death experience on Dae Soo.

Not as dazzling as The Bride's martial arts butchery in Kill Bill, Dae Soo's an-eye-for-an-eye desperation, however, leaves you trembling with fear. This role is so well played by Choi Min Sik that it definitely sets a milestone in his fruitful career. From an imprisoned lunatic, a killing machine after his release, to a toady stooping to compromise, Choi offers a perfect performance that leaves the audience in a world of blood and murders.

Besides Choi, the other leading man Yoo Ju Tae also gives an impressive performance. Yoo surprises the audience with his bitter secret that turns him from a dedicated lover to a cold-blooded wild animal, playing both the sweet lover and the scary murderer well.

From Lee Young Ae in Joint Security Area, Song Kang Ho in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance to Yoo Ji Tae in Old Boy, Park has invested his characters torn between love and hatred with more and more depth and mysteries. The clear line between good and evil is further blurred, which gives his movies a series of climaxes. Park's dedication to his movies has been well paid back. In Korea, Old Boy won beautifully in a diamond-cut-diamond battle against Kill Bill. It also came out with flying colours in the 40th Baksang Arts Grand Awards Ceremony and later it was crowned with the Grand Prix at the 57th Cannes Film Festival. All eyes will definitely be on Old Boy again in June during Korea's 2004 Grand Bell Award.

Overall, Old Boy tells the story of choosing to live like a walking corpse with hatred and vengeance or to leave the truth, however cruel, behind and breathe in free air. Dae Soo, at the end of the movie, makes his final complaint" "I live worse than beasts. Where is my right to live like a human being?" It completely shows how heavy the burden of revenge is. Can you handle it?

Extreme Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The word to describe this movie would be "extreme"... It's either you love it or you hate it... The movie centers around the concept of revenge and sin in general . It is mentally shocking and morally disturbing but that is what adds to the beauty of it.

If you want to watch a movie that would blow your mind this is the movie to go for... Just for a heads up though, don't watch this with children...

Great movie!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie deserves every award they won. At first the pacing is a little slow, makes you think why he was like that. Even Yoo ji tae role was off beat as first... but as the movie progresses, it will reveal the reason for the revenge. The true enough, the manner of putting it up is really something that is unimaginable. I do hope in real life, no one will do this for revenge. Thinking about it now gived me the goosebumps.

Amazing movie, good story... a film that is worth buying and keeping.

Shocking tale of revenge Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
A man is kept locked up, drugged, and hypnotized for fifteen years. He doesn't know where he is, why it is happening, or who is doing it to him. While he is imprisoned, he learns that his wife has been murdered and he has been blamed for it. He finally is released. Again, he doesn't know why. Now he wants revenge.

As his path of vengeance unfolds before us, we begin to learn the story behind this story. And it is shocking.

"Oldboy" is very violent and contains scenes of explicit sexuality and stomach-churning cruelty. Obviously, this is not a film for children or for the squeamish.

In the end, the film's peculiar logic all adds up and the ending is satisfying ... in a disturbed and disturbing sort of fashion. I don't usually watch films of this genre, but I must admit that I was engrossed by "Oldboy".

Old Boy Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
Old Boy is a film of INCEST and Revenge. People! Stop giving this film such great reviews. I was fooled by the reviews and award. This movie will leave you very disturbed because it approves of the incestuous relationship. And the movie should not be named Old Boy because the main character is really an ugly Old Man tryig to be suspenseful. It's a disgusting, disturbing, low budget movie. You are warned!
