YesAsia Editorial Description
Receiving an equal amount of hype and excitement as the drama itself is the On Air OST which features a star-studded list of artists such as F.T Island, leading actor Park Yong Ha, and leading actress Song Yoon Ah. Sensational band F.T Island offers their immaculate harmony in Han Gaji Mal (Track 1), the album's principal song, while Park Yong Ha, returning to Korea after a long hiatus, rolls out his smooth, ice-melting vocals in Whe Sarang (Track 2).

It's been awhile since I came across a drama that really caught my attention - so much so that I fell in love with its soundtrack as well. A drama within a drama, On Air takes you behind the making of a fictional Korean soap opera while dissecting the intricacies involved in carrying out a TV production. The story revolves around the personal and professional lives of four key players in TV entertainment - an actress (Kim Ha Neul), a manager (Kim Bum Soo), a writer (Song Yoon Ah), and a director (Park Yong Ha). By offering heaps of hilarious parodies and flashy cameo appearances by stars like Jeon Do Yeon, Lee Seo Jin, and Lee Hyo Lee, the drama instantly became somewhat of a sensation in Korea at the time of its broadcast. Certainly, one had to be a monk or a North Korean spy (to borrow a South Korean expression) to be oblivious to the hoopla generated by the drama. Along the way, its soundtrack On Air OST also received a hefty amount of spotlight. Punctuated throughout the series as its main theme, Han Gaji Mal drives along at a brisk pace and has a sort of wanderlust about it. Featuring the vocal harmony of mid-tempo crooners F.T Island, the song is awash with delightful hooks that hinge on the central theme of unrequited love. A gentle confession of love, the song unleashes the frustration one experiences while yearning for his or her love interest to reciprocate the love. Featured more frequently during the earlier episodes, the pop classical score Q bears a likeness to Viva!, a fusion classical hit performed by Bond. The song ushers the listeners into an explosive intro, enhanced by the powerful delivery of teeming string and drum sounds. Eliciting a strong emotional reaction from listeners, the song is perfect for scenes with cliffhangers. Drowned in the splendor of hope, the fourth track Seol re im can be translated into the palpitating or throbbing of one's heart. Opening with a gentle guitar riff accompanied by gentle rap, the song heads into an upbeat mid-tempo melody which is perfectly aligned with lyrics that speak of the joy of loving someone and the hope that it may lead to something special. Used throughout the series in mostly dialogue-free scenes, the song offers a ray of sunshine, chanting blithely of love that yearns to be revealed. Not to disappoint his hallyu fans, Park churns out two tracks in On Air OST: Whe Sarang and Goma un saram, both sweeping ballad charmers smoothly coated with Park's husky, masculine vocals. Song Yoon Ah, who gave a frisky performance in the drama's karaoke scene, tones down her act in Geu rim ja ("Shadow"). Exposing her character's vulnerability, the song's dreamy melancholic melody echoes the hidden pain her character hides beneath her eccentric, cheerful mask. With her unadorned vocal style playing to the sparse instrumental accompaniment, the song comes off sounding rather naked, yet the simplicity works in its favor. Conveying the emotional frustration and pain of loving someone secretly in the shadows, the song weeps in tears. I must admit I like this soundtrack more because of the drama. For carrying its own entertainment value as well as adding much value to the drama's success, I give a thumbs up to its fine leading and supporting performances. |

Ok, I was really looking forward to seeing Park Yong Ha in a drama again after Winter Sonata & Loving You but I have only been watching this show randomly. I am not a fan of Kim Ha Neul (sorry to her fans). I think they should have used someone like Kim Hee Sun who would be more convincing for the role. I have almost always watched KHN's dramas & that is because of her male co stars,Kang Ji Hwan, Lee Dong Gun, Kim Jae Won....and movies w/Kwon Sang Woo & Song Seung Hun. The OST for this drama is very good. I love the smooth voice of Park Yong Ha. Listen to him sing the main song from All In (he is listed as WHO) & Guardian Angel OST. If you like his voice, get his Japanese CD, though the language is different...wow, very nice!!! Too bad it has only 5 songs on it...it should have been about 16 tracks. The show is almost over in Honolulu but I am taping it so I may one day sit down start to watch the show. I like the idea of all the cameo star power so that will be worth watching. |
