Based on a story by revered fiction writer and playwright Choi In Hoon, Once Upon a Time (a.k.a. Long Long Time Ago, Whai Whai) was adapted into a stage play that won several prestigious awards including Best Theatrical Play and Best Screenplay at the 13th Baeksang Art Awards in 1977.

Starring veteran actors Beck Il Sub (Scout) and Jeon Won Joo (Small Town Rivals), the film version of Once Upon a Time (1978) is directed by one of the most acclaimed Korean filmmakers of the 60s and the 70s era, Yoo Hyun Mok. Best known for his 1961 classic Obaltan ("The Aimless Bullet"), considered by many film critics to be one of the best Korean films ever made, Yoo was recently recognized at the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival for his vast contribution to the world of cinema. Taking motivation from a legendary Korean fable about an infant warrior who ascends to the heavens riding a Swift Horse, the story shows a strong spiritual connection with Confucian and Buddhist beliefs.

After the unification of the Three Kingdoms, Korea undergoes great hardships due to constant threats from its neighboring country, the Tang Dynasty. As a result the whole nation is in turmoil with every street corner infested with crime. But a legend arises and spreads like wildfire throughout the country, prophesizing of a swift horse (the embodiment of a messianic figure) that would emerge upon the birth of an infant warrior. In the past, that same legend resulted in massive bloodshed, with many innocent newborns and their families massacred by Tang Dynasty soldiers. Subsequently, local governments begin to mobilize forces to search of the infant warrior. At the same time, a couple named Ah Sa Dal and Sae Oh Nyeo welcome the birth of their first child. But fear consumes them when they realize that their baby may be The One...

신라 문무왕이 삼국통일하고 난 무렵 당나라는 우리 백성을 괴롭혔으며 삼년째 한해로 민생은 도탄에 빠지고 고을마다 도적이 들끓었다. 산마을에 서마가 운다는 소문이 들리고 용마는 장수가 태어나면 따라서 태어난다고 알려져 있었다. 언젠가도 당나라 오랑캐들은 장수가 태어나자 태어난 장수는 물론 부모와 마을 사람들까지 몰살시켰던 것이다. 관가에서는 병정과 마을 남정네들을 동원하여 용마잡이를 펴는 한편 장수를 찾아내는 데 혈안이 되었다. 때마침 첫아기를 낳은 아사달과 세오녀는 두려움에 떨었고 집을 지키던 세오녀는 자기의 아기가 장수임을 알고 놀란다.

아사달도 사실을 알고 세오녀와의 처절한 싸움 끝에 끝내 아기는 죽게되고 아사달과 세오녀도 죽은 뒤 아기와 함께 용마에 태우고 승천의 길을 떠난다.
