This Mainland production is based on the classic Qing dynasty novel Zai Sheng Yuan, which tells the story of the beautiful and clever Meng Li Jun, who loses her lover to treacherous officials and is forced to become a fugitive. She vows to end all evils in the royal court by disguising as a man and becoming a top official herself.

Li shows in this period drama why she is one of the hottest actresses in China right now with her top-notch acting and stylish looks. Director Raymond Lee, a frequent collaborator of Tsui Hark and Ching Siu Tung, previously directed the 1992 remake of Dragon Inn and co-directed the classic Swordsman with King Hu.
