Outside the Edo Castle, the men fought for power and glory. Within the castle, the women fought for even more. Fuji TV's luscious period drama Ooku, first aired in 2003, brought viewers deep into the castle to the expansive inner courts housing the wives and concubines of the Tokugawa shogun. Within the veiled corridors of the Ooku, or "Inner Palace", another set of politics and rivalries reigned as the women competed for power, status, and the favor and love of the shogun. The first Ooku was so popular, it spawned two more seasons, and now a feature film.

Ooku (a.k.a. Oh-Oku - The Women of the Inner Palace) marks the film debut for TV director Hayashi Toru, who produced the three Ooku television series. Taking the same successful formula to the big screen, feature film Ooku is set during the reign of child shogun Tokugawa Ietsugu, who assumed rule at four years of age. The film depicts one of the most storied scandals of the inner courts, the power struggle between Ietsugu's concubine mother and the previous shogun's official wife. Starring Nakama Yukie (Shinobi), Nishijima Hidetoshi (Su-ki-da), and Igawa Haruka (Until the Lights Come Back), this grand tale of romance, politics, and treachery comes to the silver screen with extravagant grace, featuring beautiful sets and costumes and biting historical melodrama.
