Orange Caramel 1st Mini Album (After School Global Unit)

YesAsia Editorial Description

After School has big plans in the coming months as the group branches out into unit and solo activities. While After School is known for their sexy and powerful performances, the units will allow the girls to show different sides of themselves. First up is the spin-off trio Orange Caramel formed by members Nana, Raina, and Lizzy. Going for a sweet, cute, and sporty image, Orange Caramel is aimed for the global market, and the girls plan to promote in China and around Asia. The girls live up to their sweet name with the bright new title song "Magic Girl", a cheerful, retro-style number composed by Cho Young Soo.

All kinds of cute
I love After School for their fierceness so I must admit I had my doubts about Orange Caramel when I saw the giant bows and pink polka dot dresses. How does one go from the sexy girl power of Bang! to the cosplay cuteness of "Magic Girl"? It's actually not that odd in the greater scheme of K-pop. After all, girl groups often start with a young and cute image, and then move on to a sexy concept. After School is just trying out the reverse path with their spin-off unit Orange Caramel, and to their credit, Raina, Nana, and Lizzy wholeheartedly embrace their newfound dollhouse cuteness without looking back.

Orange Caramel's "Magic Girl" champions an unabashed, energetic cuteness that goes beyond even Girls' Generation and Kara's pouting bests, and the song is notably free of the standard electro-pop, hip-hop, or R&B elements that would bring it up to date with contemporary K-pop. It's quite different from Cho Young Soo's usual compositions, or anything else you'll hear in K-pop right now. Fans have been quick to point out the J-pop connection, observing that "Magic Girl" seems more like something from Hello! Project. What I noticed first about "Magic Girl" though is not the J-pop influence but the trot influence, particularly in the jaunty intro, bouncy beats, and talky verses that open the song. "Magic Girl" comes from a Para Para, girly girl land of pastel rainbows and candy-colored power pop, but the wonderfully arranged song is by no means soft and sweet, more hyper happy and catchy. The girls put as much energy and sass into being cute as they did to being cool, and that's what makes the song work.

An agreeable ballad with R&B beats, the single album's second song "Love Does Not Wait" lets the girls display their solid vocal abilities, and gives listeners a break from Candyland. Clearly a side track offering, the song is decent but lacks character, paling greatly in comparison to the bubbly force of nature that is "Magic Girl".

Though the sudden shot of girly cuteness from After School is rather unexpected, Orange Caramel carries the concept so well that it's hard to not be charmed, or at least cheered up, by their first mini-album. "Magic Girl" is one seriously happy song, and Raina, Nana, and Lizzy simply look adorable, pink polka dot dresses and all. The unit gives the younger, newer members a chance to take the spotlight and come unto their own, and they're doing exactly that with perky music and big smiles.

Magic Girl~♥ Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
'마법소녀' is a very cute song, though heavily affected by trot music style, but a little too aegyo voices, a little too sweet lyrics, a little too baby-ish choreography and everything resulted in 3 very colorful and adorable magical girls. They're like, every little girl's dream to become :).

'사랑을 미룰 순 없나요' is a very nice ballad track, which showed the girls' vocal skills, especially Raina's. After School is one of the rare girlgroups that I find good at ballads, and so is this little sweet trio Orange Caramel.

About the packaging, it's just really really cute. The CD cover is pink with the girls dressed in pink polka-dotted dress, with little hats and tiaras and bows, just like the Barbie dolls. They were also holding little cupcakes, which you'll see them eating in the booklet ;). Still, the dolls on the back cover kinda creeps me out. The CD front was designed like an orange and it's super cute ♥. The booklet is full of sweet pictures of the girls in the "doll" concept, with all the fluffy bright-colored dresses and doing all kinds of cute faces. They're really pretty and again, this is just exactly like every little girl's dream.

Overall this is one adorable piece of Orange Caramel that you definitely don't wanna miss if you're into this whole cute, brightful "Candy-culture" :).

I love After School, so I also love orange caramel. <3
The style is a little too Japanese stylish ... but you get used to turn quickly. And now I love orange caramel.

Raina, Nana and Lizzy are just my favorites from After School, Orange Caramel is so perfect for me! haha ~

Unfortunately, there are only two songs in one album, it would not have been a Signed CD, I would have thought twice, .. spend that much money, even if I like them! .o.

Is this a mini album? Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I personally don't think this should be considered amini album cause it has 2 tracks...
It should be considered a single album..
Well bedies tht there are a few pictures and you can look forward to those because NANA IS HOT.
Beides that the songs even though there are only 2, there really nice.
The first song-Magic girl was very childhish at first but when i kept listening to it it became very very addicting.
The second song was so calm and peaceful I added it to my morning walk playlists.
Overall good buy except it was called a mini album.

Amazing~ Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I love it!
At first I didn't like OC that much, I just liked it because Nana, my favorite After School member, was in it. After a while of listening Magic Girl I started loving the song! Also the Raina solo is pretty good!
I thought it wasn't autographed that it was just those kind of "autographs" that are printed, but no! It's really autographed! I recomend it~
The 3 girls look amazing and have great voices! Totally worth it!
The photos of the girls are totally cute!~
