Star power galore in a dark thriller
|
"Ore Wa Matteru Ze" ("I Am Waiting") is a film noir stunner. Late one night, to unwind after his long workday, restaurant manager Shimaki Joji goes for a walk in the rain along the seaside. There he spots a lone young woman staring into the water, looking like she just might be contemplating suicide. Joji approaches pretty Saeko (Kitahara Mie) to bring her in out of the rain. Saeko acts like a kitten who is used to being whipped, but slowly warms to Joji's compassionate concern for her. They begin to tell each other the stories of their woebegone lives and those stories lead them down a path to violence. Joji is a former boxer, a welterweight rookie of the year, who now wants only to leave Japan and join his brother on a farm in Brazil, a brother who has failed to contact him since he left Japan a year earlier. When his letters to his brother in Brazil are returned unopened, Joji learns that, in fact, his brother never left Japan. Instead, it appears that something terrible has happened to him. Saeko was an up-and-coming opera star, but an injury to her vocal chords has left her crooning in a crummy yakuza-run nightclub. Now she hopes only to escape the clutches of the gang boss who wants her back in his club. Ultimately, the fates of Joji and Saeko intertwine in unexpected ways. "Ore Wa Matteru Ze" paints a very dark and bleak portrait of Japan's underbelly. While Ishihara was awfully young for his role, he delivers a forceful performance of a man struggling to contain the violence that lies within. Kitahara Mie's multi-layered performance of a weary young woman who has seen too much for her tender years is an absolute revelation. The chemistry, a kind of tender wariness, between Ishihara and Kitahara keeps the viewer riveted. "I Am Waiting" is excellent. (I watched the English-subtitled release of this film included in the Criterion Collection's 'Nikkatsu Noir' boxed set.) |
