Will wedding bells ring?

While "Late Autumn" is a relatively minor work in the canon of Ozu Yasujiro movies, this simply means that it is a quite good movie by anyone else's standards. "Late Autumn" is a prolonged meditation on marriage. Three old friends meet for the reading of sutras in association with the anniversary of the death of Miwa, a mutual friend. The three friends decide amongst themselves that it is time for Miwa's 24 year old daughter to get married, so they set about finding prospects for her. Ultimately, the daughter, Ayako, rejects the suitors. She is reluctant to leave her mother, Akiko, alone. This portion of the movie lasts slightly over an hour and is rather slow. The movie really picks ups steam when the three old friends decide that one of them, a widower, should marry Akiko so that Ayako then will feel free to marry. All three of the old friends have harbored a strong attraction to Akiko for many years. Once this new scheme is set in motion, comic misunderstandings abound and "Late Autumn" becomes very entertaining. Will Akiko and Ayako marry? Watch this charmer to find out. As usual, the film is beautifully staged and shot. This late opus by master director Ozu is recommended highly. |
