A final masterpiece Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"An Autumn Afternoon", director Ozu Yasujiro's final film is a fitting culmination of a great career. The movie at root is about the toll of sacrificing for one's loved ones. However, so much of "An Autumn Afternoon" is told in a light-hearted vein that we don't perceive this deeper message until the end.

Chishu Ryu plays a widower with a lovely 24 year old daughter who takes care of him and his teen-aged son. His friends urge him to find a husband for his daughter, but he is reluctant to part with her, just as she is in no hurry to leave her father alone. One evening, after his friends have spent the evening drinking with their old school teacher, the widower takes the old teacher home and meets the old teacher's daughter, who has never married and has devoted herself to her father's care. The widower sees how this life has prematurely aged the teacher's daughter and stolen her hopes for happiness.

The widower then sets in motion a search for a husband for his daughter, so that she will not suffer a similar fate. "An Autumn Afternoon" closes with a series of scenes which are some of the most subtly touching moments ever captured on film. Ozu's mother died in the course of making this film and Ozu's personal sense of loss saturates these scenes.

If you are a fan of Ozu's films, then you must own this DVD. I recommend it very highly.
