Another Ozu gem

"Equinox Flower" is a tale of culture clash, but, while the stakes in the clash are very high, it is presented in the typically subdued Ozu Yasujiro style. A father believes it is time for his eldest daughter to get married. He initiates the process of finding an arranged marriage partner, but his daughter has other ideas. Much to the father's surprise, she has decided to marry a man whom her parents had not met. The father is furious; he is rude to the young man when he shows up at their house. And he refuses to attend the wedding. Is the family now permanently broken? That's what this film is about on the surface. At a deeper level, this excellent movie is about a confrontation between the patriarchal pre-war Japanese culture that was based on loyalty, honor, and obedience and the Westernized post-war Japanese culture in which young people may make their own choices. The subtle way in which this clash is resolved is a beautiful thing to see. Speaking of a beautiful thing to see, "Equinox Flower" is a visual delight. Each frame of the film is elegantly composed and Ozu's use of color is splendid. I recommend this rich tale of family conflict very, very highly. |
