Dark and moody yakuza tale
|
There seem to be two primary approaches to filming a yakuza movie. You either go gaudy and ultra-violent, as with Miike Takashi and Fukasaku Kinji, or you go brooding and existential, as with Shinoda Masahiro in "Pale Flower". Shinoda, who also directed such classics as "Double Suicide" and "Gonza the Spearman", in his work on this film clearly was heavily influenced by the movies of Bergman, Fellini, and the French New Wave. Unfortunately, this influence burdens "Pale Flower" with pretentiousness. The central character, a yakuza hitman just released from a long stint behind bars, was conceived by Shinoda to be a nihilist. The yakuza world, in which loyalty is everything, seems an odd place for a nihilist. This choice by Shinoda ends up sucking much of the emotional life out of the film. On the plus side, the movie is stylishly shot and effectively atmospheric. Moreover, the film's climax truly packs a visceral punch, thanks to the gripping performances of the male and female leads. Recommended for fans of existentialist films. |
