Paper Moon (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

The romantic films of the 1930s and '40s influenced director Peter Bogdanovich (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, MASK) in PAPER MOON, a masterpiece influenced by the filmmaking of those periods --a classic comedy drama that resembles the films of John Ford or Sam Wood. Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal) is a happy-go-lucky con man traveling throughout the Midwest during the Great Depression, conning widows into buying Bibles. Stopping in a small town for a friend's funeral, he is persuaded to deliver the deceased's precocious 10-year-old daughter, Addie Loggins (Tatum O'Neal, Ryan's real-life daughter), to her aunt's home. The resemblance between Moses and Addie--who never knew her father--is uncanny, and the two are soon acting like father and daughter as they travel the back roads of heartland America. Despite his initial misgivings, Moses is delighted to find that Addie is a boon to business, catching on quickly and adding her own twists to his favorite cons. Madeline Kahn stars as Trixie Delight, a ladyfriend Moses meets along the way--a situation that brings out Addie's possessive side. Bogdanovich convincingly recreates the feel and look of the 1930s with his nostalgic look at life on the open road. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay; both Kahn and the 11-year-old O'Neal were nominated for Best Supporting Actress, which O'Neal won.

"...The O'Neals' beguiling father-daughter act...plays out against stunning dust-bowl tableaux..." -- Rating: B+ - Steve, Daly (Entertainment Weekly Critic), Entertainment Weekly, 06/30/1995

Meet an unbeatable brat and her adult sidekick
Paper Moon is one of the movies I happened to come across in my pre-teen years. Remembering it to be quite funny, I dug it up again years later with my good friend and I am happy to say that it still sparkles as one of the best child actor movies I have had the pleasure to watch.

The main credit goes to young Tatum O'Neal who plays the role of a lifetime as Addie Loggins. Delivering a tour de force performance, including superb interaction with film and real-life father Ryan O'Neal as swindling but good-hearted thief Moses Pray, she no doubt is the center attraction of the film. A unique nostalgic atmosphere underlined by traditional black and white shooting and a good script with clever original dialogue also help to turn this Peter Bogdanovich film into a lasting delight.

The two O'Neals wonderfully match their performances, making it difficult not to root for them in spite of their robbing natures. I followed how the initially mismatched pair of cons sets up their unsuspecting prey with very keen interest right from the start. I believe that I may not be the only one who feels tempted to try some of the film's original con tricks which often see the stealing duo paying a relatively low amount of money, and receiving lots of unasked for change.

In any event, Paper Moon should keep you amused throughout, especially with regard to Tatum's charming pre-adolescent behavior, and Ryan's engaged portrayal of a small-time crook without a cause. At least two other things stand out for me in this film: one, Madeline Kahn's engaged portrayal of frivolous Trixie Delight and two, the mean small town police officer who I can now identify as John Hillerman, a.k.a. Magum P.I.'s Mr. Higgins. My friend and I watched this classic movie while having dinner and were nailed to our seats, and I am sure that you will also be captured by the cast's brilliant performances. This film proves that cinematic excellence can indeed be found in simple well-told tales whenever you have an ambitious and talented cast to complement it.
