From a story by "James Maki", the pseudonym often used by Ozu, "Passing Fancy" is the first installment of the "Kihachi Trilogy". This Kinema Junpo Best Film concerns the relationship between an illiterate brewery worker and his educated son. Kihachi is a flawed yet likable character whose impulses land him in trouble with those around him. The story focuses on his unrequited interest in a younger woman and the effect his infatuation has on both father and son. An early example of Ozu's masterful chronicling of the evolution of family ties and the minutiae of family life.

This customer review refers to Passing Fancy
An Ozu silent classic Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Passing Fancy" tells of single father Kihachi (Sakamoto Takeshi) and his boisterous son Tomio (Aoki Tomio) who reside in a Tokyo slum and live a hand-to-mouth existence. Kihachi works when he feels like it in a low-level position at a barrel factory, but spends most of his time finding excuses not to work so that he can sweet-talk the lovely Harue (Fushimi Nobuko), who is much too young for him.

Kihachi's lay-about life is in for some big shocks. First, it becomes clear that Harue has eyes only for Jiro (Ohikata Den), Kihachi's younger co-worker. Then little Tomio is beaten by his classmates, who hurl abuse at him for his illiterate, lazy father. Finally, Tomio becomes seriously ill, incurring hospital bills that Kihachi cannot afford.

How will Kihachi respond as these disappointments pile up? Will he finally grow up? That's the question at the heart of "Passing Fancy", which tells its tale with warmth and humor. Both Sakamoto Takeshi and little Aoki Tomio provide memorable performances. While I think it probably could have been tightened with further editing, I recommend this classic silent film (which would become the first part of a trilogy of films featuring the Kihachi character) very highly.
