Passing Flickers

YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Li Han Hsiang draws from his thirty years in the business to create Passing Flickers, a frank, funny, and sometimes tellingly off-color account of what it was like to work in Hong Kong's fast-food film industry. Based on a popular newspaper column by Li recounting his work at Shaw Brothers, the film is an episodic pastiche of moments detailing the rigors of martial arts filmmaking, the gorgeous collection of Shaw's library of sets and costumes, and the low-brow antics of the notorious erotic film output from the famed studio. Li Han Hsiang's filmography was full of popular historical epics and comedies, such as the famous Emperor Chien Lung series, though the director was responsible for a few naughty erotic comedies, too! Thanks to his varied and comprehensive career, Li's musings on the filmmaking life are able to fascinate with an authentic and even cynical wit. Full of amusing behind-the-scenes asides and a number of familiar Shaw Brothers faces (including Anthony Lau and Goo Fung), Passing Flickers is required viewing for anyone interested in filmmaking from the glorious bygone Shaw Brothers era!

導演:李翰祥
Director: Li Han-hsiang

A true cinema connoisseur's treasure, this is Li Han-hsiang's version of Truffaut's Day for Night and Fellini's 8 1/2 - being the veteran Hong Kong director's homage to his thiryt years in the business. Based on the reminiscences in Li's popular newspaper column, these amusing, fictionalized (but truthful) episodes encompass an insider's look at Hong Kong movies in all their guts and glory. Disappointing Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
If you've see Cheating Panorama, it's similar. Basically sketches built around the movie studio instead of around gambling and cheats. No focus.

Interesting & juicy tidbits Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
This movie is enlightening as it reveals the "behind the scenes" at Shaw studio. There is a lot of nudity and some very hilarious sequences. The tidbits are interesting and juicy but somehow they don't make a very cohesive whole.
Not up to Li Han Hsiang's usual high standards but entertaining nonetheless.
