Adapted from a classical Cantonese opera, Perish in the Name of Love tells a tragic love story in which dynastic changes mercilessly destroy a romance. Steve Ma and Charmaine Sheh star as a couple torn by historical turmoil during the collapse of the Ming Dynasty. This period drama also stars experienced actors such as Moses Chan, Sonija Kwok, Michael Tong, and Maggie Siu. It was quite rare for TVB to pool together such a strong cast in making this drama in 2003.

Emperor Shung Ching (Moses Chan) of the Ming Dynasty, listening to the advice of one of his cunning wives, exiles queen Chow (Maggie Shiu) and two princesses, Cheung Ping (Charmaine Sheh) and Chiu Yan (Sonija Kwok). Cheung Ping works with a blacksmith (Michael Tong), and just when he falls in love with her, she re-unites with her lover Sai Hin (Steve Ma). At the downfall of the Ming Dynasty, how will the bitter couple choose between loyalty and romance?

明末崇禎年間，崇禎皇帝（陳豪）雖欲勵精圖治，奈何國勢積弱，已難於挽回，幸得周后（邵美琪）相扶。政局雖動盪，長平公主（佘詩曼）及昭仁公主（郭羡妮）卻過著無憂的生活，她倆與吏部尚書之子周世顯（馬浚偉）自幼青梅竹馬，然而世顯只對長平癡心一片，兩人更定下山盟海誓。

一天，周后被田妃（劉錦玲）誣害，母女三人被迫流落民間，長平在鑄砲坊認識楚聖卿（唐文龍），卿對長平由憐生愛。世顯失去長平的消息，其後兩人多次重遇及分離，最終能否有情人終成眷屬？

At the end of the Ming Dynasty, the emperor SHUNG CHING (CHAN HO) wants to save the country from foreign invasion. Unfortunately, the country is already falling apart with his queen. CHOW's (SHIU MEI KI) help, they pass many difficult times. Their daughters, CHUNG PING (CHARMAINE SHEH) and CHIU YAN (SONI JA KWORK), are used to comfortable living and are not aware of the crisis within their country. SAI HIN (MA CHUN WAI) is their best friend. He loves PING and they secretly make a pledge.

One day, the queen and her princesses are exiled by the emperor after his mistress, TIN (LAU KAM LING) has set them up. PING meets CHOR SING HING (MICHAEL TONG) at an arsenal. HING pities her and falls in love with her. HIN has lost track of PING since she is exiled. The lovers meet and part for a couple time. Will they be able to tie the knot in the end?
