YesAsia Editorial Description

Sammo Hung produces Picture of a Nymph, one of many supernatural action romances produced during the late eighties Hong Kong Cinema heyday. In many ways, Picture of a Nymph resembles the classic Chinese Ghost Story - and even goes so far as to bring over some of the classic film's cast and crew! Wu Ma and Joey Wang appear in both films, with Wu Ma also handling directing duties on Nymph. Even more fitting, both Wu and Wang play roles similar to their Chinese Ghost Story ones; Wu is a wise, skilled hunter of demons while Wang is an ethereal and beautiful female ghost bearing a tragic fate.

Picture of a Nymph tells the story of shy scholar Tsui (Lawrence Ng of Sex and Zen) who falls in love with a mysterious, beautiful maiden named Mo Chiu (Joey Wang). The problem: Mo Chiu is a ghost and she's due to be married to the diabolical Ghost King (Elizabeh Lee in a gender-bending role)! In order to save his lady love, Tsui journeys to the underworld, bringing with him a father-and-son team of demon hunters (played by Wu Ma and kung-fu star Yuen Biao) who possess the means and the moves to take on all manner of supernatural creatures. Co-starring May Lo as Yuen Biao's love interest, Picture of a Nymph is an enjoyable romp with equal dashes of action, romance and special effects-enhanced thrills.

Producer : Sammo Hung

Sup saved and raised up by a Taoist Yan since he was a baby. He then becomes his assistant in exorcising ghosts and demons when he grows up. Once he destroyed a scholar Tsui's house, he asks him to move to Yan's, where they live together and become good friends. Tsui then meets Mok Sau, a wandering ghost, who jumped down a cliff to death when she was robbed and humiliated by a ghost king on her way to wedding. They fall in love at first sight, and Tsui draws a picture of Mok Sau, putting it up in his room just for seeing her more often. In order to avoid the ghost king's pursuing, Mok Sau hides herself in the picture. However, she's driven away by Yan and then caught by the ghost king. Finally, touched by both Tsui and Sup, Yan promises to go to the hell to rescue Mok Sau from the ghost king. However, Tsui and Mok Sau finally become the figures in the picture as they fail to escape in time.

A fine ghostly romance Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Joey Wang's success in 1987's "A Chinese Ghost Story" made her one of the hottest commodities in the Hong Kong film industry, leading to starring roles for her in eight films in 1988 and another eight films in 1989! "Picture of a Nymph" was one of Joey's 1988 movies and it clearly was inspired by "A Chinese Ghost Story". Like the earlier movie, Wang plays a beautiful ghost and Wu Ma (who also directed the film) plays a Taoist priest.

Wang plays Mo Chiu, a young bride on her way to her wedding when King Ghost (Elizabeth Lee) attempts to kidnap her. Rather than submitting to the kidnapping, Mo Chiu leaps to her death off a cliff. Now she wanders through eternity as a lonely ghost continually harrassed by King Ghost. She encounters and falls in love with hapless scholar Tsui Hung-Chuen (Lawrence Ng). Tsui then comes under assault from King Ghost and other otherworldly bad guys by Shih Erh (Yuen Biao), an acolyte of Taoist priest Wu Men-chu (Wu Ma). If you are familiar with the genre, then you know pretty much what to expect from "Picture of a Nymph." While the film doesn't hold too many surprises, it tells its familiar story in an entertainingly delightful manner, managing to develop some real human (or ghostly) interest in its characters.

The film includes two indelible images -- Joey Wang taking refuge within a painting and origami cranes coming to life and taking flight -- and brings its romantic story to a satisfying conclusion. We also are treated to a lovely Anita Mui song. "Picture of a Nymph" is well worth your time and money. I recommend it highly.

Variation of the ghost theme Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Joey Wang seems like she couldn't quite escape the type casting of beauty-spirit in peril. Basically if you couldn't get enough of A Chinese Ghost Story...story, here's a reprise of the theme. By the time I got around to this one, I was all spirited out & watched half heartedly...burnt from the whole concept. This would be good if you haven't broken into the Chinese ghost concepts....or if you're just trying to overdose on it.

GOOD,but not as expected Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This is a similarity movie to ''A Chinese Ghost Story'',but a bit different. Becuase the story has three guy's problem going on at the same time. And the school guy does not get to meet the ghost girl until the middle of the movie. But if you are a fan of ''CGS'' then you should try to get this movie on the DVD version, becuase the color and the images are spectacular and so are the music! I must also say that it is also a worth watching movie of your lifetime. But i garantee to you that the ending is not what most of the ''CGS'' fans has expected. Anyway does anyone know where to get the music's from this movie? Please tell me if anyone does.
