Portrait of Hell (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

A celebrated artist balks at a commission to paint a picture of something beautiful, and instead chooses to portray the terrible societal collapse he sees all around him. Starring Tatsuya Nakadai, who appeared in Akira Kurosawa's RAN, PORTRAIT OF HELL is a harrowing journey into the tortured mind of a very disturbed individual.

Chilling portrait of hell on Earth Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "Portrait of Hell", Lord Hosokawa (Nakamura Kinnosuke) has acquired absolute power at the expense of his downtrodden people. As plagues and famines take their toll on the populace, Lord Hosokawa luxuriates in blissful ignorance of the troubles. Yoshihide (Nakadai Tatsuya), a court artist, is horrified by how out of touch the ruler has become. He gives Lord Hosokawa paintings which depict the nightmarish world of the common people, but Hosokawa dismisses the hideous images. Yoshihide's struggles become personal when his daughter Yoshika (Naito Yoko), against her will, is forced to become one of Hosokawa's concubines. Seeking to free his daughter, Yoshihide makes a bet with Lord Hosokawa ... but the consequences spin out of control.

Director Toyoda Shiro is one of the giants of Japanese cinema, but this film currently is the only one of his works available with English subtitles. (Fortunately for me, I also own an old VHS tape of his great film "The Mistress" a.k.a. "Wild Geese".) "Portrait of Hell" is a well-made, somewhat overwrought, tale of the evil which resides in all of our hearts. Nakamura Kinnosuke carries the film as the cold-blooded lord lost in his sensual pursuits. Nakadai Tatsuya gives one of his least restrained performances, first brooding and bug-eyed, then wild-eyed and ranting. Naito Yoko makes a lovely damsel in distress. The viewer's reaction to the film likely will hinge on whether he or she finds Nakadai's performance to be powerfully moving or just plain over the top. Worth watching.
