YesAsia Editorial Description

Huo Jianqi (A Love of Blueness) directs Postmen in the Mountains, a touching road movie about a father and his son coming to terms in mountainous Southern China. An aging postman (Teng Rujun) is ready to call it a career, but must first pass on his appointed occupation to his rebellious son (Liu Ye of Lan Yu). Against the son's wishes, the father insists on traveling with him for one last three-day journey across the mountains and back, to show him the ropes and perhaps more. The going is tough, and the son is unwilling to listen to his father at first. But as the two travel, the people the meet and the land they traverse manage to close the gap between them. Huo Jianqi's Postmen in the Mountains is a heartwarming film about understanding through shared experience, and the hidden treasures found in seemingly average people along the way. Filled with subtle, touching moments and breathtaking cinematography, Postmen in the Mountains is a film of timeless, and utterly recognizable human emotions.

Surprisingly good! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
With a title like "Postmen in the Mountains," one is inclined to think of an adventure movie. I did not do any research about this movie before purchase and I eventually took the "risk" because of the great reviews and fantastic price. When I finally received this movie, I was immediately disappointed that English subtitles were not included; even YesAsia clearly states this also. I guess I just assumed English subtitles would be included. In addition, the presentation of this movie is awful and the menu is just horrid. Before deciding to return it, I pushed the PLAY button on my remote and WOW, it was quite an adventure indeed!

There are too many wonderful things about "Postmen in the Mountains" to overshadow the negatives I described above. First, the opening scene will grab you and from there, you will be treated to awe-inspiring scenery. Some of the scenery during the movie look like they are paintings! That's how wonderful they look! Second, the drama is very nicely executed. Don't be surprised if tears are suddenly sliding down your face while watching two particularly touching scenes. Third, the unexpected comedy is extremely satisfying. And last, even though this is an extremely short movie, I felt fully satisfied at the ending. If there was one thing I wanted more, it was definitely more screen time of the beautiful lady farmer. :)

To summarize, this is for anyone looking for a movie that masterfully incorporates adventure, drama, comedy, and some romance in less than 2 hours. Some viewers may comment that some parts were slow, but I think every scene was nicely done and well-paced. To drive my point, I don't even understand Chinese, but after the credits rolled, I felt like I understood everything that happened. If that doesn't convince you how good this movie is, then I don't know what will.

Simply beautiful! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Postmen in the Mountains" is an astonishment, a cinematic jewel of amazing clarity. A postman who works an arduous route in the mountains of western Hunan is retiring due to problems with his knees. His son is taking over the route. Together they walk the route, picking up and delivering the mail.

Perhaps this doesn't sound like much of a story for a movie, but, believe me, the filmmakers pack this simple tale with simple, yet profound, truths and jaw-droppingly gorgeous cinematography. We learn truths about being a father and being a son, about the honor of a job well done, about the love of a man for his wife and the costs a wife pays to leave her family to live with the man. We see a young man grow up and an old man realize the fruits of his life-long labors.

And all of this unfolds in only 88 too-short minutes. This is the rare film that leaves the viewer sad that it has ended; wrapped up in its magical spell, I wanted this movie to go on and on.

I cannot recommend "Postmen in the Mountains" highly enough. This is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I love this movie! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a GEM. It tells a simple story of a father,
who is a letter carrier in a remote and impoverished
area who due to leg injury, handed down his job to
his young son. They went on their first delivery
journey together, ran into different people the father
has known for many years through his job. At the end,
the son had a much better understanding and appreciation for his father. It's a touching and
deeply moving story. Oh I shouldn't forget the dog,
the third most important part of actors. All absolutely
wonderful and believable. Plus beautiful scenery and
nice music made this movie one of the most
enjoyable and unforgettable Chinese movies.

Something Fresh, Superb acting; A Rare find! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A simple story, moving and profound, yet very clear and fresh. A father retiring from his rural postal route, entrusts it to his son. This first journey together allows both father and son to know each other better than they have ever had the chance due to the long seperations due to the jobs demands. They each gain in respect for each other and their seperate worlds. A foundation of warm affections grows as the route unfolds.
