John Woo does Cantonese opera! Before A Better Tomorrow (1986) made his name synonymous with stylized gun battles and Chow Yun Fat, Woo dabbled in several different film genres, including period marital arts pictures and contemporary comedies. This 1975 musical, a faithful adaptation of playwright Tang Ti Shen's Cantonese opera classic "Princess Chang Ping," was Woo's first big box office success. Fans gunning for slow-motion shootouts best look elsewhere, but admirers of the director's trademark "heroic bloodshed" stories may be pleasantly surprised by what they find here. Woo has often called this film his favorite of his early works.
Princess Chang Ping retells the famous Chinese legend of the last Ming emperor's daughter and her love for a handsome young scholar. Unfortunately, the Manchurian occupation of China disrupts their plans for a happy marriage. Ordered to commit suicide to protect the Ming dynasty's honor from the invading barbarians, the princess instead flees to a Buddhist nunnery, where she is later reunited with her true love. When the newly established Qing dynasty offers them amnesty in exchange for acknowledging the Manchu authority, the two lovers must make a fateful choice between personal happiness and filial loyalty.

beautiful movie now got the deserved treatment

The original dvd release of Princess Chang Ping was something more like a vcd resolution. Fortune Star's new dvd release has restored the grandeur the movie deserves. Buy it , truly a collector's item. I like John Woo's presentation even better than the one from the masters of Yin and Ba. |
