가라사 성의 성주인 아즈치 모모야마는 100살 먹은 기독교 예언자의 거울, 비루젠에게 물었다. “세상에서 누가 가장 잘생겼느냐?” 그러면 그녀는 항상 “주인님이십니다.”라고 대답했다. 하지만 어느 날, 예언자는 성주의 아들 아메치요(오다기리 죠)가 세상에서 가장 아름다운 남자가 될 것이라고 말한다. 이를 견딜 수 없었던 아버지는 아메치요를 산 속에 버리고 사주하여 죽이려 하지만 그는 아름다운 여인의 도움을 받아 위기를 피한다. 여인의 정체는 사람으로 변신한 너구리 공주(장쯔이). 두 사람은 운명적인 사랑에 빠진다. 아들의 미모를 시기하는 아버지, 사람과 너구리의 사랑을 부정하는 너구리들. 동화 속 이야기 같은 그 둘의 사랑 앞에 많은 장애물이 나타나 그 둘을 떼어놓으려 한다.
