The first film from director Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Pushing Hands is a film about cultural and generational differences that blends comedy and drama in the same sublime manner as Ang Lee's later celebrated works. Master Chu (Long Hun of Eat Drink Man Woman) is a retired Tai-Chi master who moves to Westchester, New York to live out his twilight years with his son Alex (Bo Z. Wang). But Alex's wife Martha (Deb Synder) has difficulties dealing with her new houseguest, and vice versa. The minor struggles and difficulties of multiple generations living beneath one roof is further compounded by the existence of their differing cultures. Ultimately the individuals must work towards a mutual understanding, which is more about shared humanity than any individual identity. Ang Lee brings his wonderful storytelling eye to Pushing Hands, and tells a loving story where culture, age, and humanity collide in a touching and humorous way.
