　　朱曉生定居於美國，娶一外籍女子瑪莎，並育有一子，由於中國傳統的思想，他將朱老先生由大陸接往美國奉養。朱老先生是一位北京太極拳總教頭，喜好舊式中國的東西及傳統的生活，和瑪莎西化的生活格格不入，終因意見不同，思想的差距和語言的隔閡而產生衝突。

　　平日，朱老先生和華人社區交往，也因而認識了陳老太太。朱老先生教社區的人打太極拳，陳老太太教社區的人烹飪，他們彼此關懷、照顧，使社區宛如一個大家庭。

　　由於受不了媳婦的嘮叨，朱老先生搬出了朱家，自行外出打工、洗盤子，因為他無法適應餐廳的工作而頻頻出錯，打破盤子最後被勢利的老闆要求走路，固執的朱老先生不願離去，遂引發了美國警察趕到欲將其驅離現場，由於其功夫底子深厚，不但不為所動，還將許多人摔出現場，頓時成為新聞界的熱門人物，而競相報導。朱曉生知悉，乃趕赴現場，最後警方費了九牛二虎之力才將朱老先生抬離現場並交由朱曉生領回，經過這一次事件，瑪莎了解到中國人的親情而心生愧疚，欲將朱老先生請回家裡，但朱老先生仍落寞地返回其簡陋的住所。

Telling a story of Mr. Old Chu, a conservative Chinese from Beijing, immigrating to the United States to live with his son, Lee illustrates the conflicts between western and eastern cultures and their enormous differences. Through the life-touching story and detailed descriptions of the characters, the themes and philosophies behind this movie are simply depicted. To understand Ang Lee's viewpoint towards Western and Eastern cultures and enjoy his simple but sentiment-filled works, this is the one you should enjoy.
