Har Jay, a legend of Hong Kong's underworld. She climbs from the lowest depths of the Hong Kong society to become the acclaimed queen of night life. Young Har Jay starts as a waitress in a low class restaurant. She falls for handsome young men. One of them makes her pregnant. Determined to keep the baby by all means, Har Jay surrenders herself to police detective Guan who manages to silence the father. Har Jay marries Guan. She becomes the head hostess of a cabaret. She is famous for the way she trains inexperienced girl. But one of them wins Guan from her. In a rage, Har Jay castrates Guan. Only one man can cave Har Jay. He is Guan's top boss Yen. In a few years, she becomes the first lady of the Hong Kong underbelly. Buwhay, Har Jay's daughter, grows up and revolts. She goes for an upstart mobster Chao......

While watching "Queen of the Underworld", I gained the impression that the filmmakers must have figured that casting Amy Yip as a mama-san and throwing in copious scenes of violence would be enough to put people into theatre seats. Perhaps it was, but it surely isn't enough to create an interesting movie. The film's visual style couldn't be more pedestrian, its script is uninspired, and most of the performances feel like they were mailed in. "Queen of the Underworld" isn't a terrible movie, but it is a tedious one.
