Lovely comic romance

"Quiet Days of Firemen", the debut feature film from Takenaka Naoto, is a charming and heartwarming film of a small town's fire department being turned upside down by the arrival in town of a beautiful stranger. Set in a quiet seaside town, this tale nicely captures the lazy rhythms of small town life. The fireman's life is shown as one of constant preparation and waiting. Fortunately, their services are rarely needed in this peaceful community. One day Suzuki Kyoka arrives in town to spend some time with her aunt. We learn that Miss Suzuki is a doctoral student studying crabs. Two of the firemen, played by Akai Hidekazu and Takenaka Naoto, fall head over heels in love with this beauty from another world. This is the kind of affectionate film in which there are no good guys or bad guys, just ordinary folks hoping for the best. And the story unfolds in a manner which somehow manages to seem both fresh and predictable. Its only real misstep is a jarringly discordant attempt at slapstick involving a monkey late in the film. "Quiet Days of Firemen" is a crowd-pleasing entertainment that will appeal to the entire family. I recommend it very highly. |
