One Nite In Mongkok (US Version)
November 23, 2005 Zenith of HK productionThis movie has it all. Love, crime, murder, violence, friendship, betrayal, greed, revenge thoughtfully paced out within 48hrs before Christmas day. The trival petty gang squabble leading to murder plot on the local gang leader is unlike anything i have seen from HK productions. Set in the busy backdrop on one of the busiest urban scene, Mr Yee captured essence of the phlight of mainland chinese struggling in HK. The tension masterminded by the darker side of human nature. With clashed sentiments towards the good and the bad it is at times we question who the good guys really are. I was taken aback by the story let alone by the top notch cinematography and excellent sound editing. Kudos to Cecilia Cheung who demostrated top class act with her role esp with her mandarin that truly echoed the voice of her character. Congratulations to Mr Derek Yee whose vision seems to sharpen by age. I cannot wait for another quality movie from his directions. This is a gripping tale, an adrenaline rush ride for any movie lovers. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
2 Young (US Version)
October 25, 2005 2 young 2 goodThis is indeed a heart warming film. The story drawn accurately from contemporary culture of the Asia undermines the sensitivity of parenthood on teenage love. I bought the dvd initially without a clue of this intricate urban love tale. Embedded with the display of a love too young before them with a reality too harsh. The movie is threaded with joy and tears. The tension heighten with supreme acting from Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang, proving themselves worthy of father figures away from their provisional roles as street gangsters. This movie essentially is about family. The reality of the contemporary issue faced could not have found a better voice than from the vision of Derek Yee. This is definitely one of the better works from the shores of HK. And a keeper on the collection. Exceptionally well done. The movie excelled exactly on what "Cinema Paradiso" lacked. However both are love stories I shall remember.
