Rebel From China (VCD) (Hong Kong Version) VCD

John Woo usually limits his onscreen appearances to cameos and bit parts, but he plays a major supporting role as a Rebel from China in this grim 1990 action drama directed by Raymond Lee (Dragon Inn) and based on a story by Ringo Lam (City on Fire). Woo costars with up-and-coming exploitation movie leading man Vincent Wan Yeung Ming (Black Cat in Jail) as a pair of People's Liberation Army deserters who come to the aid of triad-troubled young woman (Cecilia Yip, Swordsman). Although Woo didn't get involved behind the camera on this one, his role is very much in the spirit of his trademark "heroic bloodshed" brand of filmmaking. Admirers of his directorial work, as well as fans of Ringo Lam's gritty storytelling and the ever-radiant Cecilia Yip, will all find something to their liking here.

Chen Ming (Wan) is a once-loyal member of the PLA who becomes disillusioned with the Chinese authority after his father is pressured into committing suicide. Along with his brother Kwong (Woo), Ming flees to Hong Kong, where the siblings try to build a new life without attracting too much attention. The Chens find a friend in their new neighbor Mei Ling (Yip), a struggling young woman who's gotten into trouble with the triads. The brothers decide to make a stand against Mei Ling's tormentors, a dangerous move that may cost them their freedom - or worse.

陳向明是一中共解放軍，其父因被指為走資派並在天安門自殺身亡。明與兄向光偷渡往香港。明發誓要在此地創一番事業，因而不惜捨正途而走偏門。明與光住在一舊樓之天台木屋內，其女友美玲與外婆則住在同樓另一單位內。其時，建築商柯先生向舊樓各業主收購業權，獨外婆決死不遷出出讓，柯先生遂派手下經常往其住所騷擾，光因仗義相助, 而致一腿殘廢。明欲與柯一鬥，需大量金錢，遂與貴利權走水貨上大陸，明險些送命。明與權走私後得來巨款。一次意外中，柯殺貴利權，明與柯更加仇深，明怒殺柯被警追捕，兄弟二人剖白心事，明終被捕。

Our hero, Or, People's Liberation Army. He deserts when he learns of his father's suicide due to political persecution. With his brother Hsiang-Kuang, he gets into Hong Kong. Ming vows to get rich fast, by hook and crook. The Chen brothers have as their neighbor May Ling and her grandmother. The old woman refuses to sell her room to developer Ko who, as the Triad leader starts to molest May Ling. The Chen brothers come to heir help but Kuang suffers a broken leg. Ming, desperate for money, goes back to smuggling. Thus, in a final confrontation, Ming kills Ko. May Ling and Kuang come to his aid when he is hunted by police, Ming goes into police custody.
