Prolific Hong Kong director Herman Yau strikes again with the 2009 triad actioner Rebellion. Shawn Yue (Shamo) stands in the center of a burgeoning turf war in this heady gangland drama that plays out over one very eventful night in the streets of Hong Kong. Yue plays a reluctant gangster who is suddenly promoted to the top of the pecking order after his boss gets shot, and infighting breaks out in the syndicate. Delivering both a witty script and impressive action scenes, Herman Yau offers a fresh variation to the gangster genre with his distinctive characters and satirical portrayal of triad politics. Rebellion's colorful lineup of gangsters and moles is essayed by the equally varied cast of television star Ada Choi, idols Elanne Kong (Happy Funeral) and Ella Koon (Look for a Star), Chapman To (Infernal Affairs), Conroy Chan ( Lady Cop & Papa Crook), Anson Leung (One Nite in Mongkok), and rockers Paul Wong and Jun Kung (Time and Tide).

Eastern Kowloon is a festering hotbed of crime and vice watched over by a coalition of five triad bosses who nominally get along. When boss Jimmy (Calvin Poon) gets gunned down in the streets, however, the wheels of war begin to spin. Away in Taiwan, Jimmy's wife Cheung Wah (Ada Choi) passes temporary leadership to their trusted bodyguard Po (Shawn Yue) over disgruntled #2 man Blackie (Chapman To). Po has to find the gunman and keep things under control until Cheung Wah returns to Hong Kong the next day. But in the meantime, Blackie, the other four leaders, and the police are all making moves of their own.

Notorious of its unpeace, the East district is ruled by five gangs. The five leaders, Jimmy, Cafe, Jupiter, Sa Chi and Man Sing share the same power over the area. Seemingly, everything remains calm, each gang owning its territory and conflicts rarely rising in-between. However, as Jimmy¡¦s wife Wah is so talented in managing their business which has been expanding in recent years, gradually they are the most affluent among all. Adversely, Man Sing is facing down turn of his empire, business shrinking in scale and its power narrowing down.
While the gangs are active in underground trade, the police are desperately looking forward to just one chance. Now it is time for them to take a strike. One night, when Jimmy is dining with seniors, a young man armed himself with a gun fires several big shots to his head. Knowing that, Wah stops all business dealing at once and appoints Po, Jimmy¡¦s right hand, to dig out the backhand but keep things quiet. Meanwhile, as Jimmy is still in coma, dispute spreads over the five gangs, grabbing this shot to override others¡¦ territories. Violence sprawling over the East district, bloodshed is inevitable.

With efforts Po finally drags the killer out from Sa Chi¡¦s place. Wah flies back from Thai right away to take the lead. Wandering in the still street in the midnight, Po can sense the weirdness around where policemen are missing out unusually. In fact, they already station at the airport and are expecting Wah¡¦s back. The battle between justice and darkness is about to begin.
