Ozu returns to the downtown milieu of his Kihachi films for this Occupation-set tribute to loving motherhood and the communal spirit. In post-war Japan, a fortune teller has found an abandoned boy in the streets and bring him back to his tenement, but nobody wants to take care of the child for even one night. He thinks that the widowed Otane would be the best person to take care of this homeless boy. However, Otane is reluctant to take care of hi,. Finally, the boy manages to crack open her hard shells. When the boy runs away in fear of punishment for wetting his bed, she goes on a frantic search. Film scholar David Bordwell once remarked: "If Ozu had made only this seventy-two minute film, he would have to be considered one of the world's great directors."

Ozu's first post-war film
|
"Record of a Tenement Gentleman" manages to be tragic, comic, heartbreaking, and heartwarming all in its short 71 minute running length. It is a minor masterpiece, a small gem of a film, set in the ruined city of Tokyo shortly after the end of the Second World War. Tashiro (Ryu Chishu) happens upon a young boy named Kohei (Aoki Hohi), who has been separated from his carpenter father. Tashiro brings the boy to the home he shares with the curmudgeonly Tamekichi (Kawamura Reikichi), proposing that the boy stay with them until his father can be found. Tamekichi says that he hates kids and refuses to permit Kohei to stay under his roof. Tashiro then dumps Kohei child on neighbor Tane (Ida Choko), who also wants nothing to do with the boy. Kohei doesn't help matters when he repeatedly wets his bed. After he wets his bed a second time, Tane takes the boy in search of his father. It appears that the father has left Tokyo and abandoned poor Kohei. After trying and failing to abandon Kohei herself, Tane brings him back home. However, in the succeeding days, Tane finds herself becoming attached to the lad. She tells a friend that her maternal instincts have emerged. Just when it appears that Kohei has found a happy home with Tane, fate intervenes with a big surprise. Watch this touching film to see how director Ozu Yasujiro brings his tart little tale to a satisfying conclusion ... and to see a superb performance by Ida Choko as a woman who learns to care about something more than her own selfish desires. For anyone who may have felt that Ozu Yasujiro's films might be too starchy, too highbrow, or too arty, I encourage you to watch this wonderfully humane film. Like me, you will become an Ozu fan. |

Good quality print of a masterpiece
Good quality print of a masterpiece
| This film is a masterpiece. If you don't think so, I pity you. But that is not the point of this review. This review is to tell you that the print on this DVD is quite good - clean, if a little soft. The sound level does vary, but that is likely to have been a fault in the source material. At any rate, you can buy this DVD at this incredible price with no fear that you will be watching a poor print. |
