Reunion (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Leaving the stage he's given most of his life to, retiring Cantonese opera actor Gei (Chan Kwok An) wholeheartedly hopes his daughter Hiu Lam (Joman Chiang) will carry on in his place. But his dreams are put to rest when Hiu Lam gives up opera and then becomes pregnant at a young age. Determined to raise the child on her own, Hiu Lam eventually moves back home, but relations with her father continue to be strained. Won over by his friends' support, Gei decides to make a stage comeback, but he gets injured before the show. At this time, Hiu Lam steps up and offers to take her father's place.

Helmed by up-and-coming Hong Kong director Risky Liu, Reunion is a sensitive indie drama about estrangement and reconciliation. Chan Kwok An and indie regular Joman Chiang (Besieged City) play an estranged father and daughter, working hard to carry on their daily lives as the rift between them continues to grow. With the sounds and culture of Cantonese opera forming a unique backdrop, Reunion tells a simple and affecting story about the generation gap and family misunderstandings that are too common in society.

A quiet jewel of a film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Reunion" is an unusual coming of age story about a young woman who, in shouldering the burdens of being an unwed mother, grows out of her youthful rebellion and into a mature appreciation for her father's love and her father's dreams for her. The movie is poetically filmed and is at its most eloquent during the many long scenes in which there is no dialogue. This definitely is a film for the art house crowd, but those who have the patience to let this story unfold in its slow, subtle manner will be rewarded by its heartwarming culmination. Director Risky Liu never forces the action, so the audience never feels manipulated. Instead, the viewer is drawn quietly into the simple daily lives of this small family living in a part of Hong Kong that seldom is depicted on film. Highly recommended.
