葉慈生於一九二六年美國紐約揚克斯市，二戰期間曾加入美軍，戰後在雷明頓蘭德公司擔任文宣撰稿員，六○年代曾為甘迺迪參議員撰寫演講稿。一九五三年，他開始創作，除了《真愛旅程》他還有八部作品，包括三本小說：A Good School、The Easter Parade，及Disturbing the Peace；及兩本短篇故事集Eleven Kinds of Loneliness和Liars in Love。
《真愛旅程》不但是葉慈最具代表性的作品，也是最成功捕捉美國五六零年代社會面貌的作品。葉慈獨到的社會體驗及觀察形塑了他細膩憂傷的社會寫實筆法，他的風格直接影響了後世名家如雷蒙．卡佛及理查．福特等人.。即使橫跨了四十多年,當代英國暢銷作家尼克宏比依然要說：「這本書輕而易舉就能擄獲我。」足見本書已通過歲月考驗,成了超越時間限制的經典小說。
