YesAsia Editorial Description

Chin Chien (a.k.a. Kim Chun) was one of Hong Kong's most prominent and prolific directors in the 1950s and 1960s, with some 60 films to his name. Along with filmmakers like Li Tie, Lee Sun Fung, and Wu Hui, Chin was an integral figure in the rise of Cantonese-language films, directing representative classics like A Mother's Tears (1953), Autumn (1954), Parents' Hearts (1955), and My Intimate Partners (1960). In 1965, he joined Shaw Brothers to make Mandarin-language features, and his representative works from that period included Rose, Be My Love (1966), Till the End of Time (1966), and River of Tears.

Released in 1969, River of Tears proved to be one of Chin's last films as he passed away the same year. The film was actually released posthumously a few months after the director's death. Though Chin dabbled in range of genres, he is most well known for melodramas and romances, and River of Tears showcases the director at his best, with a sentimental, romantic storyline and musical elements. The film stars matinee actor Chin Han (The Heroic Ones, Lady General Hua Mu Lan) and Shaw Brothers starlet Jenny Hu, who also appeared in Chin's Till the End of Time, Four Sisters, and Farewell, My Love.

Worth watching for Jenny Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"River of Tears", as its title suggests, is a tear-filled melodrama starring Jenny Hu as a nightclub singer. As the movie begins, she is being courted by a young medical student. The student's older brother intervenes by telling Jenny that she is distracting the student from his studies and from his engagement to another woman. He pleads with her to break up with the student and offers her a check to compensate her for doing so. Jenny accepts the check, but then gives it to the medical student when she persuades him to return to his fiance. Clearly, Jenny is a good girl.

However, we soon learn that Jenny is being manipulated by two evil guys, who act as her agents and live off of her talents. The medical student's brother, a business executive and the scion of a wealthy family, cannot forget Jenny. Eventually, after setting up the two baddies in a blackmailing sting, the wealthy elder son is able to get them packed off to prison and to get Jenny to agree to marry him.

Years later, everything is coming up roses for our Jenny. She has a new baby boy, a loving family, etc., etc. But a dark cloud looms. One of the baddies is out of prison and begins blackmailing her for money. Her hubbie learns of it and we are on course for a confrontation that could shatter Jenny's world. This being a melodrama, you know the outcome will be tragic.

The family patriarch is so upset by this turn of events that he throws Jenny out of the family without her child. She spends the next three years singing melancholy songs in nightclubs across Asia. Finally, she returns to the family home, pleading for an opportunity to see her son. Will the patriarch persist in his hardened heart or will he soften and permit mother and child to be reunited?

The ending of "River of Tears" feels strangely truncated; the film is only 74 minutes long. Director Chin Chien committed suicide in June 1969; this film was released five months later. Did director Chin take his own life while in the middle of filming this movie? Did the studio then manufacture an abrupt end of this story to get the project completed? This is not a timeless classic by any measure, but I can recommend it for its many melodious songs and Jenny Hu's nice performance.
