Heart-wrenching vocals...
Heart-wrenching vocals...

A little sad this version is out of print. This has to be one of HYDE's BEST albums. While 666 is a hardcore rock-like album, Roentgen is a rock ballad-like album. HYDE's vocals are so pure and expressive in this album. This is the english version of it, but the Japanese version is just as good. I highly recommend this album (either version) for a fan who's accumulating a HYDE collection or even those who are new to him. It's extremely hard to put this album into words... HYDE's mix of rock and violins is purely amazing in tracks like White Song and The Cape of Storms. His touch of Jazz in A Drop of Colour and Evergreen is simpy charming. The album literally feels like an X-Ray into HYDE's heart, mind, and soul (Roentgen means X-ray). It's simply... HYDE |

Love Hyde!
| Get this Japan version if you are deciding between this and the English version. I'm no sound expert and my recommendation is based on the overall feel of the albums. I can be bias because I have become Hyde's fan. Almost all the tracks in this version sound wonderful to me even though I didn't rate them with all 5 stars in the English version. I am addicted to The Cape of Storms now, I can say that the track is better with the violin part approaching the end although the composition is still a little lacking. Hyde is truly a great musician. I think he is an intellectual and also very poetic. In this album, he is deeply in thoughts and revealing his feelings and emotions through his impressionistic musical compositions and impressive vocals, and hence giving the album name of Roentgen. Please read all the excellent reviews on both Roentgen versions. Don't miss it for anything! |

I saw the promo Video of "The Cape of Storms" on an ANA flight to Japan and was immediately fascinated by the romantic and dark arrangement and HYDE's great voice. This record is a must and I immediately bought it. I hope that HYDE's fan community around the world will grow. I am from Germany and found it interesting, that he was choosing a German name for his album (Mr Roentgen is the inventor of the X-ray). I just love HYDE's music (and the man is so great). |

ROENTGEN gets an X-RAY of HYDEs thoughts
|
Probably the most melodic, English-language influenced and orchestra heavy album ever by HYDE, ROENTGEN almost collectivized my thoughts on the rudiments of reminiscence, rekindle and travel- 3 key elements why this treasure collection of ballads from the vocalist of Larc-en-ciel is one of his most unique. It develops a lot of influences from all the music styles of the world, added with HYDEs somewhat unripe English pronunciation and trademark Japanese singing. Some of the songs in the album give a great correlation to the other: A DROP OF COLOR is a heavy jazzy tune, seemingly complementing a gangster movie with its sultry saxophone. ANGELS TALE develops a great notion of acoustic?roots; the song is mostly HYDE and the vocals, but in the middle of the song, the orchestra blows into a legendary mystic that surrounds the song. EVERGREEN is a ballad type of jazz-acoustic song wherein you feel like being in a wide grassy field filled with the darkened sky, a perfect song for background enhancement. The mighty orchestra fills the air with NEW DAYS DAWN, more like a pathos-enhancing tune for the workers in a factory (notice the machinery?like tune in the song). OASIS deeply imbues a certain element of western origins, complete with techno-monotonous beats. SECRET LETTERS resemble French music in the movies, as evident in the rudiments of the song, while SHALLOW SLEEP imitates the flavor found in 666 but mellower and more billeting than the latter. THE CAPE OF STORMS made me feel like looking in the deep waves of the sea overlooking a lighthouse, complete with the dark clouds impending rain- a great song of relaxation. UNEXPECTED repeats some of the lyrics and feels like youre being swallowed in a deep dingy caf? And lastly, my favorite, WHITE SONG, is orchestra heavy and mixed with 10% Japanese lyrics and 90% English (Probably, the song made HYDE tired singing in English!), but whats striking here is the full-use of tunes that resemble a huge journey and far more- hearing the song at 2:30 onwards feels like the tune of THE CAPE OF STORMS! As HYDE gets a facelift with 666, ROENTGEN is definitely worth to be bought. The great atmosphere surrounding the album is worth repeating over and over again, showcasing the best of what HYDE could do in the matters of making a ballad album, separating his usual rock?image. |

ROENTGEN is another name for X rays
| ROENTGEN is the name of the inventor of X rays. Hence the X ray pictures inside the CD case. I thought you might want to know that tidbit of info. Anyhow on to the review. I think that it is about time that Hyde broke off from his peculiarly named band. Not that I dislike the band or anything, I think they're just fine but he really can shine on his own. Anyhow I hope that he continues making solo CD's. Some of the songs on this CD are just awesome. When I first got it I listened to it over and over. You've got to give it a try. |

Hyde's Music
|
I do recommend to all the non J-pop music lovers that Hyde's Roentgen is worth buying it. His English is just great and he don't sound like a Japanese eventhough he is Japanese. There is a great Change in tone when Hyde is singing alone and when he is with his band mates L'Arc~En~Ciel. |

A whole english album from Hyde! Awesome news for non-Japanese fans. His english pronounciation is very good and his lyrics are still as expressive as ever! Roentgen is definitely not a rock album. As seen with "Evergreen", "Angel's Tale", and "Shallow Sleep" singles, Roentgen was going to be a soothing album to listen to. The first track, "Unexpected" really is... unexpected. A slow introduction into the song, Hyde's voice is slowly accompanied by various instruments. Although, one really wonders when he would stop singing the same two lines. Nonetheless, the listener will be able to understand what kind of album this is going to be. "White Song" gives a feeling of anticipation with the orchestra behind Hyde's voice. As if anticipating snow, Hyde sings "I can't wait" (my guess was right!) Very romantic song, and as always, wonderful lyrics from Hyde. Excellent song to listen to in the winter, and as a Christmas song too. "Evergreen" is probably one of the more popular songs (since it was the first single from Hyde) and is sequenced as the third track. Nice and soothing, not much is needed to be said about this song. The fourth track on Roentgen, "Oasis" gives a darker feeling compared to "Evergreen". A more carefree sounding Hyde is presented, and the listener is already under the spell of "Oasis" as Hyde finishes singing the first chorus with "I'm mesmerized". Not a must-listen song, but not a song that should be missed either. "A Drop of Colour" is one that must be heard. The lyrics are beautiful with the one line that truly stands out: "A drop of colour saves me from/The fate I'm facing everyday". "Shallow Sleep" is definitely a personal favourite. Capturing the imagery wonderfully through his lyrics, Hyde serenades about a loved one that is only in his dreams. "You disappeared- I lost you over again" really shows the melancholy of this piece, as you can practically picture him sing in agony over the lost one. Another personal favourite is "New Days Dawn". Dark and almost unforgiving, Hyde dares the starting of the game, and asks "Why pray to the light/When darkness conceives it", giving it the despair presented here, with him faking a "God bless you". A wonderfully created piece, one must listen to all the components of this song to understand the ominous way of it. "Angel's Tale" is somewhat on the jazz side, giving another feeling of light and hope, contrasting the dark and despair of "New Days Dawn". It is also Christmas sounding like "White Song", so check this awesome song out as well. The climax of the album is captured with "The Cape of Storms" with a very memorable line: "But every dream has its time/To die". The background does a wonderful job of representing the storm as Hyde fights the storm as well as the sea. His voice is very dark and sings with the needed passion in this song. The album ends with "Silent Letters", a sweet slow romantic song to end the album. It gives a feeling of leaving a loved one as he boards the train, only carrying his memories with him. A quiet finale to the end of Roentgen. All in all, it's an awesome album to listen to. More mellow and relaxing than the rock-pumping Laruku albums, Roentgen is an album that should be listened to carefully. Lyrics, melody, instruments, voice. All components are important and should be focused on in order to understand the mind and heart of the artist. |

Don't Miss
| I overlooked this album for a while and finally decided to buy it. After listening to it for the first time, I instantly fell in love with it. It's quite a change from Hyde's usual stuff. The songs were so soothing and romantic. My fav songs have to be "Drop of Colour", "The Cape of Storms", and "Shallow Sleep". Even though the first track,"Unexpected", is a bit repetitive and more like an interlude...I just love the last part of it..really nice. This is definately a must buy for any Hyde fan. |
