黑木和雄在日本影壇中雖然不是一個如雷貫耳的名字，但卻備受尊重，原因之一，是他一直保持著獨立自主的身份，只以自己公司的名義與他片廠合作，不肯簽約給大公司，並曾三番四次為了自資拍片而不惜舉債度日。他的作品不算太多，但卻風格爽朗，豪情萬丈。《浪人街》是重拍素有日本電影之父之稱的牡野省三的同名名作，也是追掉牡野逝世六十周年的紀念作，黑木拍來，甚具氣派，人物眾多而不覺凌亂，動作場面尤其可觀，比起另一風格相近的導演五社英雄，絕對有過之而無不及！
To most Japanese filmgoers, Kuroki Kazuo may not be a household name like Kurosawa Akira or Nagisa Oshima, but in his home country, Kuroki is one of the most respected filmmakers known for his insistence to be independent and for his unique style combining documentary and intensive drama. Street of the Ronin is a project in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the death of Makino Shozo, "the Father of the Japanese Cinmea". Its breath-taking and vigorous swordplay scenes and compelling dramatic impact make it one of the best films of Kuroki, alongside his earlier acclaimed works such as 'The Assassination of Ryoma and Preparation of the Festival.
