Notorious thief Mak Gay (Simon Yam) was imprisoned for the stealing of the Malaysian Star. "Rose, Rose, I Love You" is one of the whackiest, wildest comedies you will ever see. Simon Yam plays a crazed thief who escapes from prison in order to reclaim an incredibly valuable gem he had stolen. Tony Leung Ka-Fai, in one of the silliest performances of all time, plays a police detective going undercover to capture Yam. Carina Lau and Cecilia Yip, playing respectively the White Rose and the Black Rose, also are seeking the jewel. The film succeeds as a real laugh riot because the filmmakers maintain the film's manic energy throughout. You'll hoot at Tony Leung as he pretends to be gay in order to chase a man out of an apartment, so he can live next door to Carina Lau, for whom he has the hots. You'll howl as Tony seeks to assist Cecilia in her endless futile attempts to commit suicide, attempts that always leave Tony laughably injured. It is one silly event after another in this sublimely goofy film. There is nothing high-brow or sophisticated about "Rose, Rose, I Love You". It is pure silliness from start to finish. |
