Okuda Eiji has a long and impressive filmography as an actor, and his directing career, though significantly more abbreviated, is no less noteworthy. He garnered much acclaim for his 2001 debut, Shoujo - An Adolescent, a controversial suburban drama about the illicit bond that forms between a bored policeman and a lonely teenage girl. For his 2004 sophomore work, Runin (a.k.a. Banished), Okuda collaborates again with cinematographer Ishii Hirokazu and writer Izuru Narushima (director of Fly, Daddy, Fly) to deliver a very different film - a grand period drama set against stark nature. Based on Dan Norihiko's novel, Runin brings together a talented cast of newcomers and veteran actors, including top actress Matsuzaka Keiko and famous ballet dancer Nishijima Kazuhiro.

Amidst the vast blue of the Pacific Ocean, the penal colony of Hachijou Island is home to exiled criminals of all sorts in the late Edo period. Left to scratch out existences in a harsh environment, the unfortunate inhabitants of Hachijou live by an almost primal code of raw emotions and desires and survival of the fittest. Toyogiku (Matsuzaka Keiko), a courtesan convicted for arson, continues her trade on Hachijou, selling her body as a means of survival. She falls in love with the island's newest arrival, Kisaburo (Nishijima Kazuhiro), a tough and charismatic gambler. Together they strive for happiness and homecoming, but the unrelenting conditions surrounding them offer little hope for freedom.
