Set in the booming Asian metropolis of Shanghai, the film tells the story of Japanese salary man Hayase (Watabe Atsuro), who has come to work in the Chinese city. He is stricken by grief after the love of his life died in a car accident and his will to live is slowly draining away.

One night at his hotel, as he is attempting to kill himself, he is discovered by the receptionist, Min (Xu Jinglei), and she rushes him to hospital. Min is smitten by this mysterious, sorrowful man, but she shies away from him because she has her own dark secret - she is dying from a terminal illness. Can these two lost souls - one who wishes he was dead, and one who hopes to live forever - come together and find happiness together?
