I was expecting some spectacular fight scenes as the ones like in Chinese films and great graphics. Well I got some of it but it just ended up dragging and dragging. The 105 min run time ended up feeling like a 2 hour and 30 min movie.
The beginning was good, the characters however, just didn't work. I had no interest in their love. It didn't feel real. Thus I hardly cared what happened to them. The entire movie ended up being short skirmishes with long dragged out love angst in between. Fight scenes were good, not not nearly up to par with some of the movies I've seen. In conclusion, watch it for the nice effects and sets. If you are trying to find something deeper, then look somewhere else.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

September 25, 2007 Can be betterI was actually surprised that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Any adaptation that Wong Jing puts his hands on ends up being a complete disaster. Compared to some of his previous adaptation, this series ended up being quite faithful to the original. Hard to believe I know.
I found the beginning interesting, but everything just kind of went downhill as the series progressed. Did not like some of the changed done to certain characters. I think Nie Yuan did what he can, his Hu Fei is not bad. Athena I have to say is a bit too old for her character. And Gillian did what she can, it is not her fault, but the script. Overall, the series is not bad, but I can't say it is great either. As a Wong Jing adaptaion, it's probably one of the better ones though.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

I've laughed and I've cried throughout the 41 episodes. Peter Ho and Dong Jie makes an incredible couple, their chemistry is wonderful to watch. To not be moved by the star crossed lovers is almost impossible.
They also humanized the part of Ma Wen Cai; he is much easier to sympathize with rather than being a down right hateful antagonist. The sets and costumes are also breathtaking. March 25, 2007 Beautiful~I love this drama to death. Again props to the same people who brought us Dae Jang Geum. If you liked Dae Jang Geum you should definitely try Seo Dong Yo. The sets and costumes are beautiful. The story grips you, episodes around 33-34 has one of the most intense dramas I've seen around. Yes it's a bit slow on the get go but just charges through to the end. My only complaint is with the evil writers and their cliffhangers at the end of each episode. You can't stop watching at all! February 11, 2007 Wonderful~I liked this series a lot. There isn't a lot of adaptations of this particular work of Jin yong so it's nice to see one out. I feel its one of the nicer adaptations of "Bi Xue Jian". Though I liked the TVB version as well from a few years back, they totally went off one their own regarding to the story, changing quite a bit of it. This one, however, follows quite close with the book (3rd revised version). Wonderful actors/actresses selection, the acting is superb and fitting with the characters. The fight scenes are one of the nicest I've seen on tv. If you love any of the Jin yong's books, then you really shouldn't miss this one. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This)
