 Tsui Hark makes a stinker! Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
"Seven Swords" is a pretentious flop. Seldom has so much money been wasted on such a puny artistic vision. The script gives the actors little to do but pose; the viewer can't possibly care about such thinly drawn characters. The cinematography is overly arty, making a confusing hash out of the film's battle scenes. The music is a hackneyed distraction. And the heavy metal costuming of the bad guys is a comical cliche. This is truly atrocious film-making.

 Borderline stodgy Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
Tsui Hark's style has reverted to wanting to cram "as much material into the shortest time period possible" & that's not fair to those individuals who would actually like to understand what they are viewing. There are some nice shots whether it is a moment of character or plot development but those are quickly minimized by the super-sonic speed of the entire story. After a while you stop trying to comprehend & go into a pseudo-comatose state. Not that it's much of an improvement but the TV mini-series with Vincent Zhao provides slightly more insight in that the story & plodding pace is understandable.

I liked this movie. However, there are lots of obvious flaws.
Firstly, there's not enough character development. You barely get to know the main characters since there are so many of them. Apart from Donnie, Leon and Charlie; the rest barely get any on screen time.
Secondly, it's obvious that the movie has been edited where one scene suddenly skips to another.
Overall, good fight scenes but the story kinda drags a little. Wonder if there's an uncut edition.

The movie is not bad just badly edited. Basically, Hark edited the movie to 2 and half hours from 4 hours. You will notice that some plot points are missing and makes you ask alot of questions. Its a long movie, but it moves really quick. These are really good characters, but they are all under-developed. Donnie Yen, the korean girl and some of the villains did a good job but the other actors will make you wonder why were they in the movie. Charlie Yeung character did not do anything relevant to the end of the movie. It could have been way better than this. I suggest the tv series. Its longer, somewhat better action and you get the whole plot and character development. The big bonus about the tv series is that you understand why certain people got the sword and Yunyan (spelled it wrong) is better as a dude.

Awesome movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
this movie is a tsui hark's movie. The savageness and depressing mood throughout the movie was very intriguing. Another movie that i enjoyed along with "the blade." The romantic relationship between donnie yen and the korean chick was very believable. Donnie yen was awesome as chu zhoanan and his acting puts a nostalgic and depressing emotion into the character that he plays. the korean chick also played a very blievable character that longs for her homeland! The fight sequence might seem mediocre to some people, but those people do not understand how difficult it is to choreograph fights scenes that involves sharp weapons and can potentially be dangerous. Fearless fight scenes that involved swords aren not that much better than the fight scenes in this movie. However, the final fight scene between donnie yen and fire wind was spectacular. very satisfying! i think that tsui hark was trying to capture the swordplay and actual moves done by the characters instead of having it all fast and manipulating the audience eyes. it could just be crap and people would think its cool just because it was fast and blury! overall, this was a good depressing movie. donnie yen really made the dragon sword seem so powerful and invincible. and also, there are seven swordsmen, how could a two hour movie focus on the development of each character. it only makes sense to focus on chu zhoanan because he is the most powerful and famous swordsman. VERY sad and romantic relationship with chu zhoanan and his woman. now... the series with zhao wen zhou was really bad and clarence fok should find another job because he can not direct. what happen to zhao wen zhou? i've noticed he has been in a lot of sorry movie series due to bad directing and production. he should stick with tsui hark and yuen wo ping such as the movies he did in wong fei hong, blade, black sheeps affair, etc.

This movie is so boring.
These no reason or meaning to watch this movie exept Donnie Yen.
Most of all Tsui Hark's movies have some kind of cheap flavor. Though Tsui Hark spent huge amount of budget for this project, this movie is actually cheapie. This is just for Tsui freaks, not for everyone.

 bad for a Tsui Hark movie Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
For a movie that come from Tsui Hark, this is a BAD movie. make no mistake, Tsui has always been my top director from HK, his movies were focus n have always shown inspiration( especailly OnceuponatimeinCN/Lovers/Blade ). This movie just doesnt cut it, Bad naration, wrong focus ( or none, his plot tried to cover everybody's role but badly as it turned out, not single one of 'em really work out,none gets my interest). On top of those mistakes, trhe main fault(s) for me r two things... poor fight sequences ( the last fight WASNT nearly as good, if by comparing to something like Jackie's DrunkenII, DonnieVSJet in OnceInCNII; lil nearly no creative input, everything either u have seen somewhere else and they can be done on tv standard), and secondly.. n very sadly,.. the irritative poor music score ( unrealisticly, i wanted to see James Wong come back alive to do score for this movie, they NEEDED him, that NA music composer SUKKKKKS, he doesnt undesrtand chit about asian drama n his hollywood routine dumbass cartoon track kept losing me on those fight scenes ** ). The plot; .. Seven Sword is a bad story, period. I just DON"T see much in here, a dumb noob bad guy brought back seven guys from a mountain, n his too dumb to figure out he cant fight seven at the same time, hes apperently outpowered by DOnnie at the beginning, we all knew but hes so confidnet to take 'em all at once i thought he had secret weapon yet to shown i was awaiting for that, but that was it he just went ahead n get defeated??!! what a dumb noob...
what happens to HK movies these days, Zhang Yi Mou's movies r ANTI-ACTIONs, Tsui's losing his focus, n Ang Lee's making WESTERN.. what a pitty.

The opening seemed promising with a cruel but satisfying fight sequence. But I seemed to have lost that expectation after about half the movie. The story seemed to be all over the place with so many subplots. Maybe because of so many characters. But oddly some scenes should have been edited out. Who really cares about a lost horse in an action movie? The actions looked good but I was expecting more from three great action directors especially from Lau Kar Leung. Maybe Tsui Hark is saving his best for the sequal?

Because of the negative reviews I decided to purchase a VCD version, regreting that I should have brought the DVD version. The story line is not brillant, however the magnificent fight scenes make up for its loss. Donnie Yen is someone to look out for, his action scenes have always met my expectations. Make sure you out for his latest movie SPL. the is based on the comic version and the director could have made the film better by focusing more on the characters in the film. If you have not watched this film, forget about the negative reviews and make sure you buy yourself a copy!
