Teetering on the verge of pornography, director Jang Sun Woo's controversial 1999 film Lies was banned in Korea for its graphic nudity and sexual content. Based on Jang Jung Il's banned novel Tell Me A Lie which was deemed pornographic by the censors (resulting in a six-month jail sentence for the writer), the film offers a penetrating portrait of sadomachoistic obsession between a married 38-year-old sculptor and an 18-year-old virgin. Invited to compete in the 1999 Venice International Film Festival and screened at the Toronto Film festival, the film stars real-life sculptor Lee Sang Hyun and ex-model Kim Tae Yeon in their uncompromising debut performances playing a couple indulging in a variety of sadomasochistic sexual fantasies. The film is shot in a quasi-documentary style with the loose, handheld camera work, creating an enticing, voyeuristic feel for the audience. On one occassion, the two leads are seen sharing their personal thoughts on acting out the raw simulated sex scenes. Though not for the timid, Lies is more than just an artsy sexcapade, but a disturbing examination of sexual obsession in its barest form.

It started out as innocent play. High school senior Y (Kim Tae Yeon) takes pity on her friend for suddenly ditching her studies and shifting her mind to the artwork of a middle-aged sculptor named J (Lee Sang Hyun). Hoping to introduce her aspiring artist pal to J , Y contacts the mysterious sculptor but the two end up engaging in phone sex. With her high school graduation fast approaching, Y decides to lose her virginity to J, and so she does on their first encounter at a cheesy motel. Soon their sexual odyssey continues into the second round during which J slaps Y's buttocks as part of foreplay. Gradually, J introduces hardwire, birch twigs, and poles into their act with Y acceding to his sadistic beatings. Later on, the two agree to reverse roles. While their appetite for sadomasochism continues to thrive, Y's brother threatens to pull the plug on their racy love affair.
