Shaolin Rescuers (DVD) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region 3

Feeling the Jackie Chan influence, the Five Venoms' films began to take on more comedic elements following the mostly grim action of their 1978 debut, Five Deadly Venoms. Shaolin Rescuers (1979) is arguably their most entertaining foray into martial arts slapstick. The Venoms and their director, Chang Cheh (One-Armed Swordsman), are rather infamous for brutal and graphic (if stylized) shows of violence, but Shaolin Rescuers takes a decidedly more restrained approach to the action. The result may be a bit tamer than Venoms fans are used to seeing, but the fight scenes are still first-class, and the film's disciplined tone meshes well with the comedy for a more thematically satisfying viewing experience than some of the Venoms' more uneven efforts.

Following the destruction of the Shaolin Temple at the hands of Pai Mei, Master Hung Hsi Kuan (Jason Pai Piao) seeks refuge with a trio of blue-collar kung fu aficionados who incorporate martial arts into their everyday work routines. Bean curd seller Chun (Lo Meng) and waiter Ying (Philip Kwok) use chopsticks and rice bowls as weapons, and dye factory employee Chu (Sun Chien) has a knack for balancing on posts in the ground. The three wannabe heroes are eager to help a genuine master like Hung and agree to nurse him back to health after his narrow escape from Pai Mei. Catching wind of Hung's whereabouts, Qing officer Kau (Lu Feng) shows up to finish him off, and Chun, Ying, and Chu have no choice but to become the heroes they've always dreamt of being.
