An old fave and still great Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
One of the old fave. I believe the movie gave us all (fans of martial arts and the general public) a summarised idea of how shaolin martial arts really tops them all. The art is full of history. If the Abbott had not gone with the idea of accepting outsiders for students, then there would be no shaolin martial arts today.

It's also the only time that 'Ng Mui Si Fu' actually appeared in any shaolin movie and we realise how her fist techniques eventually came to be known as 'Wing Chun' . Another disciple, Mui Choi Fa (Fong Sai Yuk's mother) was also mentioned (see Disciples of 36th Chamber with Gordon Liu, Siao Hu, Lee Li Li)

It has long been rumoured that there was a turn=coat in the shaolin temple and it's true the temple was destroyed by fire during the Ching period. As with 36th Chamber, the training techniques saves the day and the fighting choreography was great (Sifu Liu Chia Liang's trademark) . With 3 top stars like Ti Lung, David Chiang and Alexander Fu Sheng heading the list, no one actually outdone the other as the emphasis was on loyalty, friendship, sacrifice, truth and compassion besides the art and its learning process. The supportive cast were also great . As a fan of martial arts and shaolin temple history, I encourage those with the same interests to give this movie a go.

Only disappointment is they did not interview Ti Lung and David Chiang for a bit of walk down memory lane.

Good but with some flaws Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
You can clearly see that this movie was a bit rushed! The plot is weak. It's the martial arts and the training that save the movie. But with so much talent on board, you can't help but to wonder on how better this flix could have been!

Well told familiar story Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
It's a familiar story: Young men seek to gain admission to Shaolin Temple to learn the skills they need to avenge the wrongs they've suffered. When they eventually are admitted, they don't see the wisdom behind the tasks they are assigned, until they gradually perceive that they indeed are acquiring the skills they sought. This film has a huge cast of famous stars who are adept at carrying off these kung fu roles. An interesting plot twist is the presence of a turncoat among the Shaolin monks who works to engineer the downfall of the temple. Endless scenes of very impressive martial arts skills highlight this kung fu classic. The bittersweet ending left me wondering whether the filmmakers intended to make a sequel. Recommended for all martial arts fans.

Good combination of kungfu stars Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
The movie worth watching and collecting compared to today's kungfu flicks which are full of computer-animated effects destructing the origins of kunfu arts. Only Shaw Brothers studio and early Jackie Chan's fulfill that.

a classic Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This, plus the 36 chambers, should be the first acquisitions in the Shaw Brothers digital re-releases. It has everyone in it, and a great combination of humour, training, friendship, and fighting. Even those who don't remember the good old days in the theatre will love this movie.

Almost perfect Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I saw this movie many years ago in a packed theater in 1977, on the opening weekend. It was so crowded that you had people standing and watching from the aisle doorways. The audience really got into the movie and applauded when each star made their initial appearance on screen. I had a great time and I remember it as a great time for Chinese cinema.

I've been waiting for this movie for a really long, long time and delighted when I found out that Shaw Bros was finally releaseing their collection on DVD finally. The DVD image quality, DVD extras, and audio are really excellent except for one thing which sort of bugs me. This version looks like the "edited for TV" version. It isn't THAT big of a deal, as the only footage missing are from at least three sections, showing the death scenes (and blood) of various Shaolin and Manchu fighters dying. I would guess this to amount to no more than a minute or two of missing footage. The scenes aren't even that bloody or gruesome, making me wonder why they used an edited version to master this DVD. It doesn't detract at all from the movie, but it does detract from my wonderful memory of watching the movie in that packed theater in Chinatown... Sigh.

Shaolin Temple Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of my favorite of Shaw Brothers movies of the Shaolin temple. The story of the heros are classic and timeless. It brings back many memories and is inspiring to many who study and practice the martial arts. Anyone who loves the tales of Hung Hei Koon, Fong Sai Yuk, or martial arts will love this movie.

Shao Lin Temple Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Preferred " Shao Lin 36th chamber " than this. This movie has too many characters and lack of a theme. However, the appearance of many Shaw superstars like David Chiang, Ti Lung, Fu Sheng, Liu Yong, Yueh Hua, Shih Shih and many ohters will still statisfy some Shaw classics fans.
