The first entry in Japan's premier Shiki Theater Company's Showa trilogy, the stage musical Li Xianglan revolves around the amazing life of its controversial protagonist Li Xianglan, a famous China-born Japanese actress and singer of the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Manchuria as Yamaguchi Yoshiko, she rose to fame in Asia under the Chinese stage name Li Xianglan (Ri Koran in Japanese), and appeared in many propaganda films during the Sino-Japanese War period without revealing her Japanese nationality. Her nationality and role as a propaganda actress caused great outrage in China when the truth was finally revealed after the war though many of her songs remain great classics in Chinese music.
