From director Hideaki Anno, the acclaimed creator of the popular Japanese anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, comes Shikijitsu (AKA: Ritual), the oddball tale of a filmmaker (played by acclaimed director Shunji Iwai) who encounters the unexpected. Suffering career burnout, the filmmaker retreats to his industrial hometown and promptly meets a strange girl (Ayako Fujitani) who hangs out by the railroad tracks. Obsessive-compulsive, sometimes suicidal, and completely detached from any semblance of reality, the girl nevertheless intrigues the filmmaker, who begins to talk to her, and eventually films her. All the while, a slow and deeply metaphorical exploration of the fragility of the human soul emerges. Brilliant, colorful, and absolutely beautiful cinematography and set design permeate Shikijitsu, but the visual splendor is anchored by Ayako Fujitani's haunting, gorgeous, and uniquely charming performance as the disturbed girl. Possessing of the same complex, mystifying, and yet utterly fascinating wonder as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shikijitsu is Hideaki Anno's dense and deeply felt examination of what it means to be human.
