Shindo (DVD) (Normal Edition) (Japan Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Though comparisons may be forthcoming, Shindo is most definitely not Nodame Cantabile. Adapted from a Saso Akira manga, Shindo follows the subtle growth and emotions of a sullen piano prodigy, played to perfect note by teen actress Narumi Riko (How to Become Myself). Matsuyama Kenichi (Death Note) co-stars as an aspiring pianist with plenty of heart but little skill. Director Hagiuda Koji, known for his indie dramas Going Home and Paradise Sea, doesn't play to genre conventions, letting the story and characters expand and contract at will, while never drifting too far from reality or his glum adolescent muse. Quietly laced with teen angst and classical crescendos, Shindo is a restrained drama that feels alive and realistic.

Laconic thirteen-year-old piano prodigy Uta (Narumi Riko) has been in a detached slump ever since her father disappeared. With her mother (Tezuka Satomi) struggling to make ends meet, Uta was forced to leave her old house and piano behind - her father's piano, the only piano she wants to play. Much to her mother's dismay, she keeps skipping her piano lessons, distancing herself even more from the people and places around her. She starts to open up when she meets 19-year-old aspiring pianist Wao (Matsuyama Kenichi), with whom she develops an unlikely friendship.

Good Acting Weird Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Shindo definitely is Matsuyama-san`s movie, full scenes that are quiet yet loaded with emotion, scenes in which he can exhibit his massive talent - it`s acting without a trace of overacting as always, and as always, he`s brilliant. That said, the story of this movie sometimes had me confused. I didn`t get the opening scene on the river, where, in retrospect, it appeared as if Uta and Wao had met with eachother before they actually did.
The ending was utterly abrupt and confusing, and it seemed Uta`s problems, such as her relationship to her over-ambitious mother, the loss of her father and the uncertainty she felt about what to actually do with her life, were never truly taken hold of and discussed, much less solved.
The movie is most successful when concentrating on portraying the ups and downs of Uta and Wao`s friendship, and some of the scenes are really lovely. The scene where Uta plays her father`s old piano in the abandoned house at night with Wao watching and listening is pure poetry.
I`m not sure whether I`d recommend this movie to anyone except those who want to watch everything an actor has produced, though. I went for Shindo because of Matsuyama Kenichi and, having finished this pretty, but somewhat strange and, at times, dragging, movie, I cannot say it offered anything besides that refined talent.
