ニュー・メキシコの小さな町、シノーラに流れ着いた賞金稼ぎのジョー・キッドは、大した罪でもないのに拘置所にぶち込まれてしまう。彼の言い分は聞き入れられず、裁判所で刑罰を言い渡されていると、突然メキシコ人たちが乱入し、白人が自分たちの土地を不当に取り上げたと判事に訴える。しかし、判事に訴えても埒が開かず、メキシコ人たちは保安官を監禁し、土地管理事務所に火をつけて逃走する。キッドは大地主のハーランに雇われてメキシコ人たちの追跡隊に加わり、彼らが潜んでいると思われる村にやって来る。だが、そこでハーランの人を人と思わない惨いやり方を目の当たりにしたキッドは、敵に回ってハーランと対決する…。
