YesAsia Editorial Description

In 1992, Hee was trained by a secret North Korean terrorist organization to be a deadly assassin. Six years later, her extreme accuracy has taken the lives of many in South Korea, and Ryu--a special agent of OP, Korea's top secret intelligence agency--along with his cohort Lee, have devoted years to capturing slippery Hee to no avail. Ryu keeps his profession a secret from his pretty fiance, Hyun--a recovering alcoholic who runs a tropical fish store. Meanwhile, Hee’s organization has hijacked a military truck transporting CTX, an explosive potent enough to destroy the entire city of Seoul, for potential use at a soccer match between North and South Korea, which is being staged as an attempt to heal the rocky relationship between the two countries. Ryu gets word of the potential destruction, but will he be able to find the mysterious Hee and stop it in time? Je-Kyu Kang's high-tech thriller surpassed all box office records in Korea by combining breathtaking action sequences with timely politics.

"...Mr. Kang is a gifted choreographer of bloody chaos, but he has enough range and imagination to strew a few interludes of haunting tenderness amid the shell casings..." - A. O., Scott (New York Times Critic), New York Times, 02/08/2002

"...A whiz-bang opening and emotional, John Woo-inflected finale are exciting..." - Richard James, Havis (Hollywood Reporter Critic), Hollywood Reporter, 02/05/2002

"...SHIRI is a superior political thriller in which jolting action strikes a balance with serious reflection and genuine emotion..." - Kevin, Thomas (Film critic), Los Angeles Times, 02/08/2002

"...Kang is a stylish director who is at ease as John Woo or Luc Besson when it comes to presenting surreal, stylized violence....He has created a rich feel that resonates with vibrancy..." - Jae-Ha, Kim (Chicago Sun-Times Critic), Chicago Sun-Times, 03/08/2002

Shiri Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This film is brillient from the word go. Straight away there is loads of action. The plot is very well thought out, and gets very tense. In all this action there is a love story also, that is very sad at the end. This film has plenty of emotion, with class acting.
This film is great.

Be aware this is a not a widescreen version! Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
I was very disappointed when I received this DVD because the movie is presented in a letterbox format (for standard TVs) and this fact is not disclosed in the product description of the YesAsia web-site. Anyway it seems the publisher worked hard to introduce a DTS sound, but forgot to improve the format. The movie itself is excellent though.

When I dream Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Wow! This movie is one of the best Action movies I have seen in my entire life. Its a movie that could really only be produced in Korea (possibly Germany when it was also divided) and has realistic gun fighting as well as a really great love story. The love story is the best part of the film and it is what sets it apart from the Hollywood Action movies.

There is a girl (like in all action movies), but she is more than just a passive princess that needs to be protected and really only serves that function... In this movie she is like super integral to the story, and it makes the movie super melodramatic too. I never noticed that she actually plays two parts in the film... She is the N. Korean agent and she is also the patient who the N. Korean agent modeled her plastic surgery on.

A lot of action sequences are very familiar to the typical american though, you will constatnly be expereinceing deja vu in a lot of the shots...the Music is also very Hans Zimmer. (No Car chase scene though)

What makes the film unique is the political commentary... the movie doesn't portray N. Koreans as monsters but instead gives a symphatetic view. The symbolism of the Shiri and Reunification is also really cool. I love the song they play during the credits.

better than yesterday Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I was hesitant to buy this title because I didn't like "Yesterday". When I saw this movie, I figured maybe it was as boring, yet I still decided to give it a shot anyway. To my surprise, it is better, although I have to admit that there were some scenes that I didn't get. It's worth your time. For collection? You decide.
