YesAsia Editorial Description

After Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, tvN hits gold again with another "flower boy" drama that's far more substantial than its title suggests. Shut Up Flower Boy Band revolves around the friendship, music, and trials of a misfit group of high school boys, who don't have much beyond each other. Lie to Me's Sung Joon stars as Ji Hyuk, who steps up as bandleader and singer after the tragic death of best friend Byung Hee (Lee Min Ki, in a cameo appearance). Infinite's L, Mate's Lee Hyun Jae, and newcomers Yoo Min Kyu and Kim Min Suk make up the rest of the band Eye Candy.

The soundtrack for Shut Up Flower Boy Band features the songs heard in the drama, including the catchy Eye Candy hits "Jaywalking" and Wake Up performed by Sung Joon. L and Kim Ye Rim's duet Love U Like U, Lee Min Ki's "Not in Love", and Kim Min Seok's "How Come" are also on the tracklist.

Looks good, sounds good
Don't judge a TV drama by its title. tvN's Shut Up Flower Boy Band may sound suspiciously shallow, but the coming-of-age drama turned out to be far more substantial and thoughtful than its initial selling point suggested. Pointedly photogenic cast aside, Shut Up is essentially an us-against-the-world story about a group of rebellious high school boys with chips on their shoulders, and how their band and their friendship change as they face tragedy, fame, and growing pains. Along the way, the drama's fictional band Eye Candy released two singles that are as ear-catching as the band is eye-catching.

Heard often in the drama, "Jaywalking" (Track 3) is the song that launches Eye Candy to sudden fame. It's also the song that seals the band members' friendship, their commitment to each other and their late bandleader. With such loaded meaning attached, "Jaywalking" proves to be a satisfying repeated listen for both its sentiments and its musical sensibility. The raw, earnest, and rebellious rock number has a convincing, retro grittiness to its bass and riffs, and a likable, catchy melody that beats most K-pop plugs. Wake Up (Track 5) is even more assertive and alternative, pushing a harder rock sound with pulsating beats and a flair for the dramatic.

Much of the credit goes to Loveholic's Lee Jae Hak, who wrote and composed the Eye Candy songs. As a music director, Lee has been particularly adept at creating soundtracks for music-themed productions, such as 200 Pounds Beauty and I Am Legend, and he hits home again with Shut Up Flower Boy Band, managing to bring out a moody garage rock sound even in a pop-friendly soundtrack.

As the lead singer of Eye Candy, leading man Sung Joon has shown himself to be not only a promising and charismatic actor but also a decent singer. He doesn't have very strong vocals or range per se, but there's a deep melancholic tone to his voice that works great with the band songs. The inexperience is particularly apparent in the acoustic ballads "Today" (Track 7) and "Words You Shouldn't Know" (Track 9), but his husky, unpolished performance is disarmingly moving.

Lee Min Ki, who cameoed in the first two episodes of the drama as the original lead singer of Eye Candy, is something of an aspiring rocker in real life. He released an album a few years ago that was very sincere, if not entirely successful, in its foray into alternative rock. Though he's often demonstrated his knack for screaming as an actor, Lee Min Ki's singing voice is actually more suitable for soft, fluid rock numbers, so it's very appropriate that his OST contribution, a cover of Platinum Blonde's Not in Love, is a Brit-rock piece with breezy beats rather than the rough-edged rock of Sung Joon's Eye Candy.

Perhaps the biggest wild card of the soundtrack is the pairing of Infinite's L and Kim Ye Rim for Love U Like U (Track 6). Kim Ye Rim has a very distinctive voice and singing technique that could potentially overwhelm L's more standard pop delivery, but they manage to balance their voices for the gentle and sweet duet. Ye Rim also passes the challenge of covering W&Whale's "Circus" (Track 8). While she doesn't bring anything new to the song, her version of the edgy electro confection is on the mark and worth the listen.

With eight songs and only two prologue and epilogue instrumentals, this drama soundtrack actually stands strongly on its own as a music release, much in the way that the songs in 200 Pounds Beauty and I Am Legend could be enjoyed in their own right. Shut Up Flower Boy Band doesn't just look good, it also sounds good.
