Actress/singer Ueto Aya is back on the music scene with Smile for…, her first single in two years. This single is the end title theme for the TV Tokyo anime Katekyo Hitman REBORN!. The complementing song Mou Ichido Dake, featured in the TV Asahi series Renai 100 Kei, and penned, co-composed and arranged by Ryoji and Naoki-T, the same team responsible for Ueto's 2006 single Egao no mama de. Smile for… is the first release in Ueto's Smile Project 2009, with her fifth album following later in the year.
This edition features a Katekyo Hitman REBORN! design sleeve cover.

A reason to smile for!

'Smile for' is a great catchy fast paced pop song, it's not Aya's best but it's a song that you can listen to time and time again plus it will make you smile! I'd rate it 4.5/5. The coupling song 'Mou ichido dake' is even better. It's a beautiful ballad but without being too slow or boring and i'd rate it 5/5. This single also shows off Aya's new improved vocal skills, though Aya was always a great singer she now has a better range and can reach some of the higher notes more easily than before. A bonus is that both songs are quite long as well with 'Smile for' being 5:40mins long and 'Mou ichido dake' being 5:13mins long. Aya's english has also improved and is particuarly cute in 'Smile For'. The DVD however is a bit of a letdown. On it is the PV for 'Smile for' but it's an edited shortened version at 2:52mins long rather than the full 5:40mins version of the song included on the CD. The PV itself is not Aya's best by far though it is still nice and worth watching. The best part of the PV is Aya singing in the studio but most of the PV is just the music playing to behind the scenes footage of Aya and the team. So although i do enjoy watching behind the scenes footage it wasn't what i had expected and since it had been 2yrs since Aya had released a single i was really excited to see a new PV and so was a little dissapointed that her PV wasn't like her previous ones. I hear that Aya's music comeback was kept secret so that it would be a suprise to fans so that might explain why the PV was a bit low budget looking as if they had really gone to town on the PV and spent a lot of time filming it than it would have been harder to keep secret. So because the included DVD isn't the best you may want to just buy the normal version of the single though this version with the DVD does have a much better CD cover and the PV is still nice to watch so if you are undecided I would still recommend going for the CD+DVD version before it's out of print. If you do buy this single and love it then there's also Aya's Happy magic album that came out shortly after this single which is the other part of her 2009 Smile project. It only has 10 songs but the songs are all long with the shortest being 4:22mins and the longest 6:28mins so that makes up for the short tracklisting so if you do fall in love with this single make sure to check out the Happy magic album too as it's in the same theme. |
