Zhou Xuan, legendary singer in the 1930s, was also known as the "Song Bird". Stories about her have always been hot topics for TV series and movies. This was the first time for TVB to adapt her miserable life into a TV series, with the cast led by Nadia Chan, a new joiner at that time. At first, people wondered whether Nadia Chan had the ability to take up such a sophisticated role. However, famous TV producer Siu Sang was brave enough to dedicate this important role to a high school student who was just 20 and quite green in the field. He thought that Nadia would be the most suitable person despite her age and experience. Her captivating performance proved that Siu Sang was right. With her charming appearance, beautiful voice and ability to sing and dance well, Nadia Chan delivered the role of the "Song Bird" to perfection and became really popular after the series was shown in Hong Kong.

Not only was the TV series a big hit in 1989, Nadia’s same-titled album also became the best seller of that year. Apart from Nadia, the series also featured two very famous singers/actors in Hong Kong, Leon Lai (Moonlight in Tokyo) and Aaron Kwok (Golden Horse Best Actor for Divergence). This was the only TV series when both appeared together. Co-starring other veterans, Song Bird is an appealing TV series which you simply cannot resist.

周大偉（譚炳文）與其小老婆葉艷鳳（柳影虹）收養了一名女嬰，取名小紅。自此周家家道中落，紅在艱苦歲月下成長。長大後，紅（陳松伶）得機會加入明月社劇團，遂開始了她的歌唱生涯 ，改藝名為周璇，後得參加歌唱比賽而嶄露頭角。 　　

璇雖然被團員綠萍（何嘉麗）敵視，但得嚴小華（黎明）及張雪文（馬海倫）的支持和愛護。華與璇亦漸生情愫，幾經波折終於結為夫婦。 　　

璇的契爺婁建中（戴志偉）發展電影事業，邀璇為演員，但心中只當璇為搖錢樹，華護妻情切，與中起衝突，中遂設奸計破壞他們夫妻感情，終令華、璇仳離，璇大受打擊，卻又遇上布匹行的少東羅浩德（關禮傑），德對璇關懷備至，竟令璇再陷情網……
