"Queen of Swords" Cheng Pei Pei exchanges her martial art weaponry for a syringe in this exotic contemporary drama by Pan Lei. Paul Chang Chung plays Dr. Ho, who decides to move to a backward island off the coast of Taiwan to look for his missing father. He meets nurse Ya Lan (Cheng Pei Pei) who falls in love with him. But dastardly doings are afoot as Dr. Ho's enemies plot against him. It is a joy to see Cheng flex her dramatic muscle against the more fragile Lily Ho.

Spotty island romance Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
In "Song of Orchid Island", Chang Chung plays a handsome young doctor who journeys to the remote Orchid Island, off the southeast coast of Taiwan, to conduct research and to seek to determine what happened to his father, who disappeared on the island 20 years earlier. Cheng Pei-pei (only 19 years old when this movie was made) is a native islander who becomes an assistant to the doctor. Miss Cheng is coveted both by the son of the local chief and by the chief's main rival, but Pei-pei has eyes only for the doctor. Will the adorable Pei-pei win the doctor's heart? Will her native suitors permit the local beauty to embrace an outsider?

To describe the film's story in this fashion gives the movie too much credit. Almost nothing works in "Song of Orchid Island". There are a multitude of minor characters who add nothing but annoying distraction. There's the spoiled rich girl (Lily Ho) who demands Chang Chung's affections. There's a photographer and his assistant who are supposed to provide slapstick comic relief, but are as funny as a toothache. There's a gweilo priest who clogs up the film with his clumsy Mandarin speech. There's a pair of mainland tough guys who seek to profiteer off of shells from the island. All of these characters could -- and should -- have been left on the cutting room floor. As a consequence of their presence, the film's main storyline seems rushed and superficial.

In the end, there are two main reasons to watch "Song of Orchid Island". First, the movie does provide occasional interesting glimpses of native life on this remote island. Second, the exuberant, youthful charm of the gorgeous Cheng Pei-pei is irresistible. Recommended only for fans of Miss Cheng.
